Institute Professor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At the Massachusetts Institute of Technology the title of Institute Professor is given to a small number of members of the faculty with extraordinary records of achievement. Usually no more than twelve professors hold this title at any one time. At some universities the titles of Distinguished Professor or University Professor or Regents Professor are counterparts of this title.
According to MIT's Policies and Procedures manual, the title of Institute Professor is reserved for those few individuals who have "demonstrated exceptional distinction by a combination of leadership, accomplishment and service in the scholarly, educational and general intellectual life of the Institute or wider academic community."
While the process for selecting Institute Professors begins with an ad hoc faculty committee, the final determination is made in consultation with outside opinion from professionals in the nominee's field. The recommendations of the committee are reviewed by the Academic Council, and are finally subject to approval by the Executive Committee of the Corporation.
An Institute Professor has a unique freedom to define the scope and nature of his responsibilities; he does not have formal departmental or school responsibilities, and reports directly to the provost.
