  • Then fill in the blanks between the = and | signs
    • use just the names of the image files themselves, the formatting is already done by the template (i.e. City_country.jpg). Do not link or format the pics
    • similarily, website parameter should by filled by the link itself, i.e. website=http://www.um.warszawa.pl/|
    • if you don't know how to fill a field - fill it with "Unknown"
  • If you don't have a location map prepared you can use Halibutt's contour map
  • Replace the dummy flag and Coat of Arms with the correct ones (if you have them).
  • Note: Remember that in correct Polish language declension is used, thus correct form of council will be e.g. Rada Miasta Szczecina instead of Rada Miasta Szczecin

[edit] Discussion

Jest tu maly blad - jak w przypadku Poznania automatycznie zalinkowalo informacje o herbie pod Coat of Arms of Poznań. Aby dzialalo musi byc Coat of Arms of Poznan.--Emax 00:36, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)

  1. English please
  2. I know there is a problem with lack of Unicode support in English wiki. It's a minor one since you can always make a redirect to the proper name and I was assured that soon the English wiki will be updated to finally put an end to all problems with character encoding. The problem is finally solved :) Halibutt July 2, 2005 06:14 (UTC)

[edit] New variant

I have made a variant of this template for cities which don't have a flag here Template:Infobox Poland (no flag) since the dummy flag didn't really look good to me. You can see that template in action in Glogow. I removed the flag and put the location map in its place (like it is done in, for example, de:). I also added 2 more parameters - one for postal code and one for the non-unicode spelling of the name, for links to work properly - the 2 latter ones could also be added here :). [edit] Polska flaga

Flag of Poland

Zdrawiam! ;) --Artur Lion 11:35, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

Brief translation: Artur Lion suggested that we added a Polish flag somewhere inside the Infobox, to which I strongly object. //Halibutt 08:47, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] City flags

If have added a qif template around the syntax for displaying the city flag. Now if the flag variable is not specified, the image will not be displayed. This will eliminate the need for the unsightly dummy-flag images with a question marks for cities which do not have official flags. Balcer 06:40, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Complement EU

On December 16, 2004, The World Factbook, a publication of the United States' Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) added an entry for the European Union. [1] According to the CIA, the European Union was added because the EU "continues to accrue more nation-like characteristics for itself". Their reasoning was explained in this small statement in the introduction:

The evolution of the European Union (EU) from a regional economic agreement among six neighboring states in 1951 to today's supranational organization of 25 countries across the European continent stands as an unprecedented phenomenon in the annals of history... ... for such a large number of nation-states to cede some of their sovereignty to an overarching entity is truly unique... ... the EU ... has many of the attributes associated with independent nations: its own flag, anthem, founding date, and currency, as well as an incipient common foreign and security policy in its dealings with other nations. In the future, many of these nation-like characteristics are likely to be expanded. Thus, inclusion of basic intelligence on the EU has been deemed appropriate as a new, separate entity in The World Factbook. However, because of the EU's special status, this description is placed after the regular country entries.

I might add that EU citizens have EU- numberplates, -passports, drivinglicense, the EU institutions, and regular election. I hope you support the small extension I made... all the best Lear 21 18:31, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Oppose as the EU is not a soverign state, nor is it a country. --Bob 22:29, 24 October 2006 (UTC)
Strong oppose. Daniel Šebesta (talkcontribs) 23:34, 24 October 2006 (UTC)

Please stop reverting the addition in country column and reconsider your stance. For an overwhelming number of reasons EU is already a country-like entity and deserves to stand there, like in any official affairs. all the best Lear 21 10:56, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Strong oppose. The EU members are independent nations, and none of them has relinquished this status. The World Fact Book is a popular source, but its quality is in many respects poor. E.g. until around 1998, it listed Denmark's date of independence as 1849 (which is at least 1,100 years off.) I could mention other examples, but this is not the place. Some politicians / eurocrats hope that the EU will one day become a country, but no treaty grants it any such status, and millions of Europeans are strongly opposed to such a scenario. Just to give an example from my own country; the Supreme Court of Denmark was asked a few years ago what would happen should an EU law ever contradict the Danish constitution. The answer was that in that case, the Danish Constitution prevails. I know of no Danish politician that has suggested otherwise. Since the evolution of the EU is a political dispute - which is very sensitive in many countries - adding EU as part of the country name is not a neutral stance. Regards.
