- This template documentation is transcluded from Template:Infobox OS version/doc [edit]
The Infobox OS version template is intended for use with computing articles that discuss a particular version or release in a series of graphical operating systems. As of 2006, the only operating systems that fall into this category are Mac OS, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.
Template:Infobox OS and Template:Infobox OS 2 are the preferred templates for articles on operating systems.

[edit] Parameters
[edit] Basic information
- name
- Required. The name of the version of the operating system. This should match the name of the article.
- e.g. "Windows 2000".
- family
- Recommended. The name of the family/line of operating systems that this version is a part of. This is automatically wikilinked.
- e.g. "Mac OS X".
- logo
- Optional. An image path for the logo associated with this operating system. The template will force a width of 250 pixels. Logos used must comply with Wikipedia:Logos guidelines.
- e.g. "Image:Microsoft Windows XP Logo.svg"
- screenshot
- Optional. A screenshot depicting the operating system in its default configuration. Screenshots should not include any non-standard themes, third-party applications, or personally identifiable information. Also, per Wikipedia:Avoid self-references, no references to Wikipedia should be visible.
- e.g. "Image:MacOS81 screenshot.png"
- caption
- Optional. A caption describing the screenshot. Use of the word "screenshot" in the description can be considered optional, as the template places the image in a section titled "Screenshot".
- e.g. "Mac OS 8.1 desktop"
[edit] Developer information
- developer
- Recommended. The name of the company or organization that produced this version of the operating system. This is automatically wikilinked.
- e.g. "Apple Computer"
- website
- Recommended. An external link that points to the primary marketing or support web site for this version of the operating system. Try to keep the displayed URL short.
- e.g. "Windows 2000"
[edit] Technical information
- source_model
- Optional. A brief description of the distribution method of the operating system's source code. A wikilink to an article is suitable.
- e.g. "Closed source"
- license
- Optional. The software license under which this operating system is available. A wikilink to an article describing the license is suitable, but not necessary.
- e.g. "Microsoft EULA"
- kernel_type
- Optional. The type of kernel used with this operating system. A wikilink to an article is suitable.
- e.g. "Hybrid kernel"
[edit] Release dates
This template offers some advanced version display capabilities to cover both pre-release and generally available operating systems. In an effort to ensure information about dates is both verifiably correct and useful to readers, the template will insert a fact tag beside the release date information if no URL is provided. When in doubt... leave it out.
- first_release_date
- Optional. The general availability date.
- e.g. "February 17 2000"
- first_release_url
- Required if first_release_date is set. An external link that serves as a citation for the release date. This should meet Wikipedia:Reliable sources guidelines. A press release from the developer is preferred.
- e.g. "http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/1999/Dec99/W2KrtmPR.mspx"
- preview_version
- Optional. A version or "build" number for the most recent widely distributed preview version of the operating system. Generally speaking, private or "leaked" builds are not suitable for mentioning on Wikipedia, as this doesn't meet our Wikipedia:Verifiability or Wikipedia:No original research policies.
- e.g. "Beta 1(build 5112)"
- preview_date
- Required if preview_version is set. The availability date of this build.
- e.g. "July 27 2005"
- preview_url
- Required if preview_version is set. An external link that servies as a citation for the release date. This should meet Wikipedia:Reliable sources guidelines.
- release_version
- Optional. A version or "build" number for the most recent release version of the operating system.
- e.g. "10.4.7"
- release_date
- Required if release_version is set. The availability date of this release.
- e.g. "June 27 2006"
- release_url
- Required if preview_version is set. An external link that servies as a citation for the release date. This should meet Wikipedia:Reliable sources guidelines. A link to the developer's web site is preferred.
- e.g. "http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxupdate1047intel.html"
[edit] Other information
- support_status
- Recommended. A description of the current status of support from the developer. For operating system versions that have an announced end-of-life date, that should be included. A citation from the developer's web site is also recommended.
- e.g. "Unsupported as of December 31, 2004."
- other_articles
- Optional. A list of other Wikipedia articles that contain information specified to this version of the operating system.
- e.g. "<ul><li>Features new to Windows Vista<li>Development of Windows Vista</ul>"
