The Information Trust Institute was founded in 2004 to provide a central research group spanning several departments to approach information security research from a systems perspective. It brings a unique and holistic approach to information security by looking at what makes machines, applications, and users trustworthy.

The Information Trust Institute is comprised of over 60 researchers spanning several different departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The center's current director is William H. Sanders who also was the driving force behind the formation of the institute.
