The Inferno match is a type of professional wrestling match, occasionally seen in World Wrestling Entertainment. There have been only four instances of this kind of match since its introduction in 1998. The objective of the match is to set the opponent on fire in any way. To accomplish this, the ring is surrounded by fire, carefully controlled by pyrotechnicians. The match type is closely related to the in-ring gimmick of Kane (Kane believed himself at one point to have suffered permanent facial scarring in a horrible fire when he was young), and announcers still refer to it as his specialty match despite the fact that he's never been victorious in one.

Wrestlers protect themselves from harm by wearing special fire-retardant padding under their costumes. Inferno matches are very rare today because of health concerns and because of state sports commissions expressing concern over safety. Undertaker once said in an interview that it was impossible to breathe properly in the ring when the flames were on as they burned most of the oxygen up. WWE.com calls the Inferno match "possibly the sickest of all WWE matches."[1]

[edit] Trivia

  • Kane has wrestled in every Inferno match, but has lost every time to date (the fourth Inferno match against MVP has yet to take place).
  • The Undertaker has the best record in Inferno matches, going 2-0.
  • The Inferno match at Armageddon 2006 will be the first Inferno match in 7 years, since 1999. This match will also be the first Inferno match in which Kane has wrestled unmasked.
  • There is no referee in the ring during an Inferno match.
  • Kane has been feuding with MVP over the last two months on SmackDown!, in matches such as Street Fights, Steel Cage matches and a tag team match which saw the reunited Brothers of Destruction (Kane & Undertaker) defeat "Mr." Ken Kennedy & MVP. However, in the Cage and Street Fight matches, MVP defeated Kane both times. According to kayfabe, SmackDown! GM Theodore R. Long has been putting MVP into these matches as a result of an extremely well-paying contract for MVP, and the fact that MVP will stop at nothing to get out of a match with Kane.
