The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, tonight approved the Union Cabinet's decision recommending President's rule in Goa setting aside the controversial trust vote won by the Pratapsinh Rane-led Congress government.

The House voted 17-16 in the Congress government's favour, with Speaker Francisco Sardinha casting his vote after there was a tie. United Goans Democratic Party legislator Mathany Saldhana was restrained from voting by the speaker by passing an ad-interim order.

The Union Home Minister, Shivraj Patil and the government unhappy with the controversy took suo motu action without waiting for governor's report. President's rule is Central rule under Article 356 of the Indian Constitution.

Narain Karthikeyan, India's first Formula One driver, made his debut at the Melbourne grand prix.

Narain finished 9th in the first qualifier. He was the fastest amongst the 4 rookies at Melbourne. Narain is with team Jordan.

The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, tonight approved the Union Cabinet's decision recommending President's rule in Bihar following the stalemate in government formation. Bihar has been under President's rule 7 times earlier.

A MiG 21 fighter jet of the Indian Air Force crashed soon after it took off from the Naal airbase in Bikaner, Rajasthan.

The pilot was killed and seven people were injured on the ground. The pilot who was on a routine sortie, hit a water pump house as it took off.

BJP leader Arjun Munda was sworn in as Jharkhand chief minister by Governor Syed Sibtey Razi along with five Independent MLAs. The support of the independents is crucial for the state government's survival. Arjun Munda was invited to form the government, after the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-led United Progressive Alliance failed to prove its majority on the floor of the House.

Sachin Tendulkar turned Pakistan paceman Abdul Razzaq for a single to reach 27 soon after tea, he had become only the fifth cricketer and the second Indian to reach 10,000 Test runs. Sachin was playing his 122nd Test and the second TVS Cup Test at the Eden Gardens.

Kanishka tragedy accused acquitted in Canada

After a two-year trial, Justice Ian Josephson, a Canadian judge acquitted two Indian-born sikhs and accused masterminds, Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri, of murder and other charges in the deaths of 329 people killed in the bombing of Air India Flight 182 (also nicknamed Kanishka). On June 23, 1985, Kanishka enroute from Montreal to London exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Ireland.

India beat Pakistan in Kolkata cricket test.

India beat Pakistan in the Kolkata match by 195 runs and are now ahead in the three-Test series 1-0. Anil Kumble ran through the Pakistan middle-order in the second Test at the Eden Gardens, in Kolkata. Kumble finished with match figures of 10 for 161. Rahul Dravid was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his centuries in both innings of the Test. This is the first time Indian beat Pakistan in Kolkata in a Test match.
