[edit] New addition
I've added this because people keep on editing Indic text so that it appears okay (or better to the editing user) on incorrectly set up PCs - causing errors for people who have the appropriate rendering support for Indic scripts. I'll eventually add a link so that people can learn how to add this support on common operating systems. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 20:39, 6 August 2005 (UTC)
- This template seems to have spawned some slo-mo revert wars of its own, on more than one article.[1] [2] Is there a way to make the template visible only on the edit page? That way, people won't be tempted to see the template as clutter and remove it. Alternatively, we could put the template on the talk page and then refer would-be copyeditors there. --Skoosh 06:47, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
-
- Well, only Hindi seems to have had one revert. Punjabi has not had any reverts of the template. As far as I know, there is no way to put this on the edit box. Also the type of people who make these changes are not the ones that will bother reading the talk page. I've reduced the prominence of the template quite a bit since I originally made it but if we make it too small, people won't even bother reading it! Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 07:12, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Placement
Can this be placed at the bottom of articles like IPA-related templates? Placement at the top makes it look like urgent work needs to be done to the article. --Tydaj 12:47, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
- The reason I put it at the top is because it's not there for the same reason as the IPA related templates. It is designed to prevent people from editing using computers without complex text support and not simply notify them of the use of certain characters. I suppose the question is, will people ignore it if it is at the bottom? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 13:20, 20 August 2005 (UTC)
-
- I'm torn over this. I hate to have all these big WARNING template clogging up the article intros, on the other hand, it is true that many people edit first and ask questions later, so that it may indeed be the only way to prevent these permanent well-meaning "corrections". Could we maybe just make it a little bit smaller? dab (ᛏ) 13:38, 26 August 2005 (UTC)

- I agree that this template was much too large. I have thus made it smaller and right aligned so it is somewhat less prominent. - SimonP 14:15, August 27, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] General Appearance
[edit] Font Issues
The use of bold font in the first sentence seems to serve no purpose. Since the font itself is small, the bold font does not appear bold at all. Also, for small text, a font like Verdana is better suited than Arial. Could we have that change? I am seeking a consensus.
Current Code
{| width=300px; align=right class="expansion" style="background: #f7f8ff; border: 1px solid #aaa; padding: .2em; margin-bottom: 3px; font-size: 95%; line-height:1.2;" | | [[Image:Example.of.complex.text.rendering.(small-white).png|center]] |<small>'''This page contains an [[Brahmic family|Indic script]]'''. Without sufficient text support you may see irregular vowel placements and no conjuncts. Suggested Change

- The reason you may not be able to see the bold text could be an issue with your computer. I can certainly see the bold text here. I also don't support the change of font to Verdana. Font styles should be up to the user to decide in the preferences section - we shouldn't be specifying them. Also, using Verdana would make it inconsistent with pretty much everything else on Wikipedia. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 10:29, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

- You're probably right. Alright, let's keep it the way it is now. --Lettherebelight | പ്രകാശമുണ്ടാകട്ടെ | Talk 12:19, 1 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] New Templates
This right-aligned template doesn't work on all pages, so I've created left (Template:IndicTextLeft) and centre (Template:IndicTextCentre) aligned templates. Please use those if the formatting on a certain page won't work with a right-aligned template. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 17:42, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
[edit] TfD nomination of Template:MalayalamScript
Template:MalayalamScript has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion#Template:MalayalamScript. Thank you. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 22:23, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Image change
I strongly prefer the previous image (consonant and vowel sign) to the current tricolor (which basically does not provide any information). The old one at a glance clearly indicates the type of problem one is likely to see. — Knowledge Seeker দ 06:05, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
- I have reverted it, but even this image hardly provides any information, for people who don't know Gurmukhi. Probably, something that shows a half-consonant not rendered properly would be much clear, since that is the most common problem affecting people. I think, rather than arguing over an image, it would better to have a clear non-technical text and no image. --Pamri • Talk 09:07, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
-
- Well, actually the process is immediately evident to anyone who knows Gurmukhi, Devanagari, Bengali or Gujarati. Also, the rendering of half-consonants isn't a necessary feature of complex text rendering. Showing a visible Virama is just as technically valid. However, repositioning of vowels IS a necessary feature of complex text rendering.
-
- There is no way we can adequately show complex text rendering so that all readers of Indic scripts will know exactly what is happening. The only solution would be to use a neutral symbol, which helps nobody equally well. We could replace it with a Brahmi character, the mother of all Indic scripts? Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 11:47, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- This also means that it conveys absolutely nothing to people conversant with the remaining 18 languages / dozen scripts. Whither the flexibility people were at long last showing, regarding using a Brahmi character / no character / neutral symbol / Pamri's picture logo?? Forgotten once the object is gained?? ImpuMozhi 23:10, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

-
- No, it hasn't been forgotten. I merely suggest that the people who wish to change the image show some samples of adequate replacements and then everyone can come to some sort of consensus as to which image to use. Obviously something neutral like a Brahmi character or some sort of identifying mark would be appropriate. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 23:39, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Width
The width of the template was pretty unconventional as templates go in Wikipedia. I've adjusted the width to 270 px (most Infoboxes, images, etc are in that ballpark). Let me know if this is an issue. AreJay 19:31, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- As far as I am aware there are no standardised info box sizes on Wikipedia. This size was actually set to match that used by language info boxes. Which info boxes in particular are you talking about? If the text is reduced below 290px, another line gets introduced which makes it look uglier imho. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 21:59, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Category
What exactly do we anticipate the category being used for? This is a meta-category and should properly be on the talk page, if a category is needed at all. But I would think what links here would be just as good. Christopher Parham (talk) 23:16, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Font
I think this template should also mention font, because not everyone will have fonts that support all Indic scripts, like Burmese for example. So please mention that as I think most people would just see boxes or question marks anyway. --Hecktor 13:02, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
