[edit] Metalled ?

Err, could someone confirm that "metalled" means "paved"? I was totally confused at reading this term over at Santoshpur, then found the word again here. I found some description at Pavement_(roads)#Metalling which I think says "paved" is the meaning. Would it be understood by Indian readers if the word "paved" was substituted? Because I don't know how many non-Indian's understand "metalled". I know I was wondering about street railways ... Shenme 04:04, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi There

I guess its time for Indians to learn new words.

Well, it is more a matter of there being several words for things, and wondering whether a more commonly understood word might be substituted. For example, if I talk about someone "getting a shellacking" the reader might legitimately be confused, thinking someone was getting paint on themselves. I might substitute "getting battered" and they'd end up thinking "cake?" Anyway, this is just an originally British English word that has stuck around, as it has the single understood meaning in India. Hey, maybe just say " ... metalled (paved) ...." ?
