The film revolves around a group of villagers from Maranur, India, and their clash with a neighbouring village leader, as their community begins to prosper. Soon money and greed threaten a will for peaceful coexistence between the two rivalling communities. The film stars Anuradha Haasan, sister of the director Suhasini, as well as Arvind Swamy and Nasser in lead roles.

The soundtrack features 6 songs composed by A. R. Rahman, with lyrics by Vairamuthu.

The song Nila Kaikiradhu from the soundtrack became very popular upon release, and still makes rounds today as a ringtone across the state.
