IndianPad is a social bookmarking and blogging website. In other words the users on the site create and manage the content.

The users submit stories to the site and then the story gets promoted, demoted based on votes from other users. Any user can promote a story without a registration. Registration is required to demote a story or to enter comments.

The site is similar to digg but provides far more control to the end users (no time limit on editing comments, allows editing of story, etc.)

These sections display a running view of whats happening all over the site.

  • Who's Online - Displays the flag of the country along with a description of the page the visitor is on.
  • Live Cast - Displays a running count of last 30 activities on the site. New stories, comments, votes and problems are all displayed here. The page updates using AJAX and no refresh is required.
  • Live Search - Last 30 searches are displayed here along with the country of origin of the search. This allows for privacy as well as provides information on whats users are searching for.
  • Live News - This collates news stories related to India from multiple sources and provides it in one place. This page updates itself using AJAX and need not be refreshed.
  • Recent News - Similar to 'Live News' but this provides access to all news within the last 24 hrs and allows users to search within them as well.

You can view information about what story a user has submitted, voted or commented on by browsing the user pages on IndianPad. The user pages also have some demographic information about the user.

  • Users on a Map - This uses a Yahoo Maps mash-up that displays the geographical location of all users who have entered it on their profile. This is great to locate users who are close to you. The map automatically centers on your current location and show the users in the vicinity.
  • Users on a List - A list of all users on IndianPad in a tabular format.

Registered users at IndianPad can report the story using any of the reasons displayed in the image. This also deducts a vote from the story. Stories with numerous negative votes are removed from the index (though they are still available using a direct link).

Indianpad uses Gravatar which is a globally recognized avatar. Gravatar follows the user and displays a user-image next to their name on Indianpad. The users are distinguished by their e-mail address, whose MD5 hash is sent to the Gravatar server for the correct avatar to be returned. Indianpad only shows Gravatars rated with the MPAA-style system, making the site appropriate for viewer of all ages.

Users need to be registered with Gravatar for their avatar to display on the site. Registration is free.
