From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Indiana University School of Medicine is the medical school of Indiana University, based at the IUPUI campus of IU in Indianapolis, Indiana (the main campus of IU being in Bloomington). It is currently the second largest medical school in the United States.
Established in 1903, the school had an initial class of 25 students. For the 2003 - 2004 academic year, when the school observed its Centennial Celebration, it welcomed 280 first-year medical students. First- and second-year students attend classes at either the main Indianapolis campus (approximately half of the class) or one of eight regional centers at college campuses throughout the state (Bloomington, Muncie, Fort Wayne, South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, West Lafayette, and Gary). Third- and fourth-year students spend the last two years of medical school at the IUPUI campus, honing their clinical skills as well as doing their classroom and laboratory work.
Students train under faculty and staff to help patients at the Clarian Health Partners system which includes Indiana University Hospital, James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children and Methodist Hospital. They also train at the Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center and the Wishard Health System. Only the Methodist Hospital is not on the IUPUI campus.
The School also helps train interns and residents in 92 medical and surgical specialties.
