Indiana Beach is an amusement park located in Monticello, Indiana on Lake Shafer, a manmade lake on the Tippecanoe River. The park, originally named Ideal Beach, opened in 1926 with only a sand beach swimming area, bath house, and refreshment stand.
Today it is home to one of the state’s largest coasters, the Hoosier Hurricane, and dozens of other amusement rides. Some of its other coasters include two older steel coasters...the Galaxi and the Tig'rr, and two other wooden ones, The Cornball Express, and the Lost Coaster of Superstitution Mountain.
There is a hotel and there are cottages for rent on the Indiana Beach property. Adjacent to the amusement park is the Indiana Beach campground with over 1,400 camping sites.
Indiana Beach is also home of The Shafer Queen, Indiana's largest regularly scheduled paddle wheel driven sightseeing vessel. The boat is 26 feet long, 82 feet long, weighs 76 tons, and has a capacity of 250 passengers. Between 50,000 to 60,000 passengers per year cruise on the Shafer Queen.
One of Indiana Beach's slogans is "There's more than corn in Indiana."
It has been said that a way to tell if someone is indeed from Indiana is to ask the person to finish the sentence "There's more than corn in Indiana at ________." The answer of course being "Indiana Beach." This is due to the frequently repeated television advertisements.
It is recommended to visit Indiana Beach after dark to get the full experience due to the colorful lighting.
