Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, located at Management House, College Square West, Kolkata-700073, was the first management institute in India and was established in 1953. It was established in 1953 and is the first B-School of India. However, it should be noted that the claim of IISWBM being the first management institute in India is disputed as the Xavier's Labour Relations Institute XLRI [1] was established in 1949 at Jamshedpur by the Jesuit Society.

IISWBM was set up in collaboration with the Government of West Bengal, the University of Calcutta and the Business Community of West Bengal to promote management education. The University of Calcutta affiliated the MBA program of the Institute for 50 years. The affiliation, which was supposed to end in 2003 is still renewed on a year by year basis by the University

The institute celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2003 and the Government Of India released a stamp on IISWBM to celebrate the event; no other Management Institute in India so far has been accorded this honour.

The Institute offers the following courses:

  • MBA
  • Masters of Human Resource Management (MHRM)
  • Public Systems Management with specialization in Environment Management

Energy Management, Hospital Management and Transport and Logistics Management

  • Post-graduate Diploma in Bio Informatics in association with ECIL
  • Post-graduate Diploma in IPR in association with FICCI
  • Sports management

The institute also offers evening courses in:

  • Post-graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM)
  • Post-graduate Diploma in HR MManagement (PGDHRM)
  • Public Systems Management (PSM)

The MBA (both Day and Evening Programme) and the MHRM Programme are affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The other courses are offered by the institute as PG-Diploma courses.

IISWBM has been a pioneer and innovator in the field of management education in India. It has successfully envisioned future developments in management and also contributed in the social sector. The Institute also publishes a management journal called Survey.

The Sports Management Department is now called the Naval Tata Centre of Excellence in Sports Management in memory of one of the most distinguished Industrialist and Sports Administrator of India. The Sports Management course is the only one of its kind in India. All the batches have obtained suitable placements and the department has decided to provide a winter internship each year

IISWBM and Pantaloons (PRIL) have entered into a JV to introduce a 2 year programme on Retail Management. This course will involve 15 months of classroom teaching followed by 9 months of practical exposure at PRIL stores.
