[edit] History
It was established in 1961 as an autonomous institution by the Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat and Indian Industry. Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, a noted scientist and industrialist and other Ahmedabad based industrialists such as Kasturbhai Lalbhai played a major role in the creation of the Institute.
[edit] Evolution
IIMA was conceived not to be purely a business school, but a school of management. Its mission is to professionalise Indian management through teaching, research, training, institution building and consulting. It also aims to professionalise some of the vital sectors of India's economy such as agriculture, education, health, transportation, population control, energy, and public administration.
In its formative years, IIM Ahmedabad collaborated with the Kellogg School, Wharton School and Harvard Business School. Largely as a consequence of these collaborations, IIMA pioneered the case method of teaching in India. Even now the strength of IIMA is its strong emphasis on the case method.
[edit] Academics
The institute offers the following programmes:
Post Graduate Programme (PGP): IIMA's flagship offering, the PGP is a full-time two-year residential programme, leading to a Diploma in General Management. Each year is split into three terms. with the first year consisting of compulsory courses, and the second year comprising mostly of electives, allowing the students to specialize in their chosen fields. After the first year, the students are required to complete an eight-month industrial internship. Halfway through the second year, around one quarter of the students are selected to participate in an exchange programme which allows the participants to spend one term in a foreign institute.
Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM): The PGP-ABM is a full-time two year residential programme designed to prepare students for careers in management related to agriculture, food, agri-business, rural and allied sectors of the economy. The course comprises three components: the core management courses, compulsory food and agriculture-related courses and the elective courses. The ABM students have the first year in common with the PGP. In the second year, students can do a project course that involves research in the practice of management in particular organizations or sectors.
Post Graduate Programme in Public Management and Policy (PGP-PMP): The PGP-PMP is a full-time residential programme for mid-career executives with at least 7 years of work experience. The programme leads to a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Management and Policy. The programme has three modules – a core management (CM) module, a core public management and policy (CPMP) module, and electives leading to concentration in a number of areas. In addition, an international attachment/ exchange module provides the necessary exposure to working at senior levels in public policy and management.
Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX): The PGPX is a full-time residential programme for executives with substantial work experience leading to a One Year Post-Graduate Diploma in Management for Executives. The programme has a general management focus, with a unique course structure that places emphasis on managing across borders and cultures. It has an international project (called International Immersion) besides teaching content drawn from many countries.
Faculty Development Programme (FDP): The FDP is specially designed for teachers, researchers, and trainers in HRD, training colleges and industrial organizations for their management education requirements.
Doctoral Programme (FPM): The FPM aims to provide students with necessary skills to identify and research complex issues in the field of management. The programme offers research training in ten areas of specialization, and generally take four to five years to complete their doctoral studies including two years of rigorous course work. Course work in the first year provides a general management overview and develops basic skills for analysing managerial problems. In the second year, students take advanced doctoral level courses in their areas of specialization. The doctoral dissertation, for the next couple of years, provides them with an opportunity to make original contribution to an area of management or to one of its source disciplines.
Apart from the above, the institute also offers various Management Development Programmes (MDPs) in general management and different functional areas, throughout the year.
[edit] Campus
The campus of IIMA is dominated by the baked brick style favoured by its chief architect, the famous Louis Kahn. All the structures are designed to be part of a whole and looks one integral whole. Other architects who collaborated on the campus include the renowned B. V. Doshi and Anant Raje. As of January 2005, there are 25 dorms in IIMA, each of which can hold 25-44 students in single-person rooms. Each dorm has its own distinctive culture and traditions. Work on a new campus is going on as of 2005. The new campus is just across the road from the old campus and houses 7 of the 25 dorms and some class rooms and seminar halls.
