Independent video game industry

The independent video game industry is a grass roots portion of the video game industry that consists mainly of small game companies of one to fifteen people. Such game developers often develop their games as freeware or shareware, relying on giftware and open source for tools. Independent video game publishers provide marketing for independent developers, and are the source of much innovation in the industry, often influencing the mainstream industry.
