Independent University, Bangladesh (Bangla:ইনডিপেন্ডেন্ট বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) or IUB is one of the finest private sector universities of higher education in the country. It is also the only university, both in private and public sectors, which has two campuses, one at Dhaka and other at Chittagong. Its main campus at Dhaka spreads over 14 independent buildings each with eco-friendly premises at Baridhara, the most healthy area of the capital and the extended campus at Chittagong is housed in one big multistoried building in a prime area of port city. The university was established in 1993 and the out reach campus in Chittagong was opened in 1999. A permanent campus is being built in Bashundhara.

IUB graduates enjoy excellent employment within and outside the country. They have secured valued places in the job market and are making a significant contribution in their fields of profession, with a reputation of excellence.

1. IUB provides a fellowship programme for scholars from home and abroad to do research and study in Bangladesh.

2. The provision for study at a foreign university in fulfilment of the IUB degree requirements. This is incorporated as one of the curriculum's options in the fulfilment of the IUB degree requirements.

3. An International Advisory Panel (IAP) provides information and guidance to the IUB faculty on curriculum matters, course requirements and academic standards.

In addition to correspondence and exchange of experience with the International Advisory Panel Members, other specialists and experts, the University has established collaboration/link relation with top universities and institutions abroad.

An agreement has been signed with Hamline University, St. Paul USA, which provides for collaboration on student exchange programme, teaching, research and course and curriculum development.

A memorandum of understand was signed between IUB and Pokhara University, Nepal to promote collaboration in research, faculty exchange, student exchange and curriculum development in environmental management.

[edit] Maastricht School of Management (MSM)

(A joint IUB/MSM MBA Programme)

The University in conjunction with the Maastricht School of Management (MSM), the Netherlands started the MBA programme in March 1997. Fifty percent of the courses are being offered by Professors from MSM. IUB's own faculty are supplemented by distinguished Professors drawn from its link institutions including Asian Institute of Technology (AIT, Bangkok), Ecole Superieur de Commerce de Paris (ESCP, Paris) and Indian Institute of Management (IIM, Ahmedabad and Kolkata).

An agreement has been signed with the Moscow State University (MSU) providing for cooperation on scientific and cultural exchanges between students, teachers and scholars' research and publications.

IUB signed a link agreement with the prestigious Plekhanov Academy, which considers collaboration of faculty, student exchange and joint research in the field of economic and business management.

There is a link agreement under the French Government cooperation with Ecole Superieur de Commerce de Paris (ESCP), Paris and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok to assist in the development of IUB School of Business.

Under the auspices of US-AID, the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) provides a population environment fellow in the School of Environmnet Science and Management to development teaching and research programme in population and sustainable development.

[edit] Free University, Brussels (VUB)

There is a cooperation agreement with Vrije Universitiet Brussel (VUB) (Free University Brussels, VUB) to strengthen IUB School of Environment and Management. This agreement provides for regular exchange of faculty between the two universities, internship placement of IUB students of VUB, and research opportunity for VUB students of IUB.

In Dhaka, the University works closely with the International Center for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR, B) that has best equipped environmental biological laboratory in the region and the Islamic Institute of Technology (IIT). IUB faculty also includes a number of senior teachers and researchers from national universities and International University projects in the country as part-time or visiting members.

IUB policy is to develop its own teaching faculty together with growth of the institution. In the initial years, few appointments are made at the level of professor. The core positions offered are Assistant and Associate Professors to enable the incumbents to grow with professional challenge and the institutional development to their respective professional eminence. Junior professionals as lecturers and junior lecturers support this core faculty. In addition, there are senior fellows appointed on inter-university contract or directly recruited visiting scholars appointed on minimum 1 year contract. The are a number of distinguished professors appointed on contract to conduct a specific programme of study and or to guide institutional development. The University has a strong programme of faculty training in order to remain highly competitive on academic performance.

Besides teaching, the teachers are expected to supervise research and field training of students and themselves, conduct useful research to develop new and relevant teaching materials. A full time teacher, other than very senior or distinguished professors on fixed responsibility, is expected to engage 44 to 48 hours per week in teaching. Student counselling and professional self-development activities with authorized consultancy included.

IUB provides excellent academic facilities for its students. IUB has well stocked library with electronic communication backup. Its computer center provides online facilities to all students which is under fibre-optic network system. The university laboratory consists of five units: 1. Physics 2. Chemistry 3.Biology 4.Environmental Science and 5. Geographical Information Service (GIS) Lab. IUB also has established a language center to teach the English and French languages effectively.

[edit] Status and Involvement

A full time student is required to take a 12 to 18 credit course load per semester. A 15 credit load is deemed as the average full time load per semester. A student taking more than credits will require the special permission of his advisor and will be charged additional fees. Less than 12 credits taken in a semester will classify the student as part time and will be charged on the basis of per credit hour. A full time student is expected to be engaged for about 9 to 10 hours a day or approximately 65 hours per week in study and related activities. An estimated breakdown is:

  • Classes 15 hrs
  • Tutorial/etc 10 hrs
  • Study preparation 20/25 hrs
  • Creative work (hobby group work, paid employment) 15 hrs

Total 60-65 hrs per week.

The University has no immediate plan for providing student accommodation. Most recent study shows 86 percent of students stays with parents and only a small number with other relatives or on their own. As a policy, students registered at the University will be recommended to stay with their parents or guardians designated by parents.

Intra campus transport: There is a free bus service connecting all the buildings of the University campus at fixed intervals from 8.00 am to 6.30 pm when classes are open.

Three well supervised and hygienically maintained canteens are located in three campus buildings in baridhara campus. These are open from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm during weekdays when snacks and refreshments are served. Students are not encouraged to buy food prepared by street vendors.

[edit] Physical and Mental Well-being

A senior medical consultant is available on call. His service is backed up by well equipped Gulshan Group Clinic at Road 51, Gulshan. The students have access to specialist consultation/counseliing in the area of mental well-being. Emergency medicare is available through a trained nurse on the academic premises.

There is every effort to make the students' stay at the University both productive and enjoyable. There are facilities for both indoor and outdoor games in the University premises. Students are encouraged to organize and take part in outdoor sports as well. They are also encouraged to utilize their different creative skills in group projects/professional clubs and cultural activities, and publish a souvenir yearbook. At present there is a Computer Club, French Club, Chess Club and Debating Club organized by the students of the respective departments.

The University offers Advisory Services and organized job fares etc. Students are encouraged to discuss ideas with their academic and career counsellor to focus on the future career options and job placement. The earlier a student makes use of this service, the more likely that his career aims will be achieved. Students are welcome to discuss any ideas with career advisor to help focus on the future. Career options, job search and the use of database on business and individuals are part of the assistance offered. Close links are maintained with local and national employers through the IUB UPDATE, mailed periodically. This newsletter keeps prospective employers abreast of the progress and expansion of the University.

Each year, visiting faculty members and leaders of industry, commerce, social sciences and environmental development are invited to deliver informative talks on careers, organized by IUB, to recruit final year students.

The campus is held in a restricted area in order to optimise effective and uninterrupted use of all facilities to meet the University's educational and co-curricular programmes. On the other hand, IUB considers itself a community institution and fosters a close relationship with people outside. At the commencement of the Autumn Semester, IUB organizes Freshers' Day to welcome the newcomers and IUB Fest (festival), cultural functions participated by students. The community relation programmes are organized by the Division of Students Activities (DoSA) Office with students participating as volunteer hosts and guides. Visitors with prior appointment are welcome at all times.

1. In IUB logo, the Blue Leaf represents the western tradition, Saffron Leaf the eastern. The middle Flame represents the synthesis of the eastern and western traditions. It also conveys the idea of purity.

2. IUB has four schools offering fifteen undergraduate and five graduate programmes.

3. The Dhaka and Chittagong library contain over 18,000 volumes and subscribe to over 100 journals and periodicals. There are 1336 audiovisual cassettes and CD ROMs.

4. Its website says the enrolment of students are 3054 (69% are male and 31% are female) and the University employs a total of 125 full-time faculty.

5. Extracurricular activities like sports events, debates and other cultural activities are arranged by the Division of Students Activities.
