Idependent Grocers of Australia, or IGA, is a chain of independent supermarkets in Australia. It is the local variant of the international Independent Grocers Association.

[edit] IGA in NSW/ACT

IGA in New South Wales and the ACT has two retail formats:
Channel One: Supa IGA
Channel Two: IGA
Channel Three: Friendly Grocer IGA/IGA X-press/IGA Everyday promise quick service as a small convenience store format.

Channel One caters for everybody - Supa IGA stores stock a full range of products. IGA stores are medium sized supermarkets. Both channels have the same logo - a red oval with the white letters IGA inside it. There are currently over 150 IGA/Supa IGA stores in NSW and ACT.

During 2005 aruond 13 ACT IGA stores left the IGA group and rebranded as "Shop-Rite" a former ACT independent brand that was rebranded IGA during the 1990's. This meant a change in supplier and rather than getting their products rhrough Metcash in Blacktown, all deliveries now came from Queensland. Less than a year later all stores returned to IGA's and Metcash after ordering goods from Queensland resulted in longer waits for delivery. One Shop-Rite remains in Belconnen.

IGA was founded in Victoria and there are currently three channels of retail:
Channel One: Supa IGA is the new name for larger format stores
Channel Two: IGA stores have a full grocery range
Channel Three: Friendly Grocer IGA/IGA X-press/IGA Everyday promise quick service as a small convenience store format.
The logo is the red oval with the white letters IGA inside it.

IGA in Queensland and northern New South Wales was launched in 1998. There are now over 200 stores operating from Port Macquarie to Cooktown and west to Mt Isa. There are three retail channels:
Channel One: Supa IGA is the new name for larger format stores
Channel Two: IGA stores have a full grocery range
Channel Three: Friendly Grocer IGA/IGA X-press promise quick service as a small convenience store format.

IGA information for South Australia is limited, but here is an extract from the IGA website about IGA SA's involvement with the IGA Community Chest program:
"IGA is committed to supporting the wider community. There are few communities unaffected by the recent bushfires on the Eyre Peninsula and the tsunamis in Asia. Cummins IGA, Darlings IGA (Cummins) and Tumby Bay IGA have all been actively involved in supporting the firefighters and victims of the fire on the West Coast."

There are currently two IGA business channels in Western Australia. In 2005 Woolworths Ltd purchased FAL Ltd as part of this purchase Woolworths was required by the ACCC to divest some FAL owned Action Supermarkets in Western Australia. These Action stores became Supa IGA stores, on 1st May 2006. At the same time the independent network of Dewsons stores along with most Supa Valu stores, both previously supplied by FAL changed their names to IGA while retaining the same ownership. There is only one remaining Action store remaining in Australia; Coffs Bank in New South Wales. So far there are two channels of IGA:

Channel Two: IGA stores stock a full grocery range.
