Category:Indian economists

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some noteworthy Indian economists. There are many people who have been civil servants or ministers dealing with matters connected with economics. They have been excluded here. The rule employed here is that the person should have written one or more substantive research articles and/or books, and contributed to the field of economics at the level of ideas; to have not just been a practitioner. The focus is not on Ph.D.; that's neither necessary (e.g. Montek Ahluwalia) nor sufficient (e.g. Y. V. Reddy). The other dimension in which filtering is done is by the nature of the person's work. Many superb economists have no connection to India in their professional work (e.g. Avinash Dixit). They are not listed here. In contrast, people like Jagdish Bhagwati and T. N. Srinivasan have lived outside India for the bulk of their professional lives, but have been enormously influential in thinking about India. A reverse example is Jean Dreze, who wasn't an Indian national, but has been very influential in the field of Indian economics. In short, this list is the hall of fame of the people who shaped the ideas of Indian economics.
