"In the Evening" is the first song on English rock band Led Zeppelin's final studio album, In Through the Out Door, released in 1979. The track features an extended distorted introductory section led by Jimmy Page's guitar, before beginning the song proper. The track is the most straightforward rock song on the album, yet at the same time introduces the more synthesizer driven sound found on In Through the Out Door. Page likely used a Gizmotron to create the droning effect in the beginning of the song, although it is possible he used a violin bow instead.
Led Zeppelin performed this song live during 1979 and 1980. During the 1979 performances, this song would be played directly after Page's guitar distortion solo.

- Robert Plant's lyrics are about how the rich and famous are still exposed to pain and suffering, just in different ways. [citation needed]
- Page used a Gizmotron - a guitar processing device invented by Lol Creme and Kevin Godley from the band 10cc - to get a strange distorted sound.
- When they were recording this album, Jimmy Page and John Bonham were spending a lot of time together and would usually show up at the studio very late and work through the night. This started out with just drums and keyboards created by John Paul Jones, who had a new drum machine to work with.
- The intro, which was created by running a guitar through a synthesizer, was apparently taken from a soundtrack Jimmy Page was working on for fellow Aleister Crowley admirer Kenneth Anger's film Lucifer Rising. The soundtrack for the film ended up being provided by Bobby Beausoleil, a member of the Manson family.
