[edit] Overview
B'eirth’s earliest known project called, SubCulture, was recorded in the mid 1980s. None of this earliest experimental material was ever released. Soon after his family moved to Utah in the late 80s, he helped create the band Mary Throwing Stones, with Lincoln Lysager (The Ursula Tree) and Kyrbir Is-p- (Purr Bats, Puri-do, Hooo). In 1991 MTS relocated to Seattle where C. Barry Semple (The Swains) and Brian Castillo (The Living Jarboe, Salon Betty) joined their ranks. The music of MTS ventured into experimental loudness, apocalyptic folk and found instrumentation similar to the Virgin Prunes, Current 93, and Crass. Mary Throwing Stones officially disbanded in 1993 after recording 3 CDs, and B'eirth then turned his focus to his then new project, In Gowan Ring.
In Gowan Ring formed in 1992 and wanted to create music similar to the music of the Troubadours and Trouvères. IGR's sound has been described as dark, haunting folk music deeply rooted in the early music and European folklore. B'eirth has studied the music and poetry of both Troubadours and Trouvères and combined this with his more eclectic musical beginnings to make a beautiful and original sound.
The first IGR performances happened in Seattle galleries and clubs during 1992-1993 incorporating the help of former band mates among others. Soon after being signed to the World Serpent label out of London, B'eirth embarked on the life of a minstrel and has constantly toured and travelled in the USA and Europe since. He has toured and collaborated with Nick Castro, Brian Castillo (aka pFrenz-C), Michael Northam, Annabel Lee, Michael Moynihan, James Hodson, Martyn Bates, Joe Budenholzer, Alio Die, Ian Read, Matt Howden, Soriah and many others.
B'eirth is an accomplished musician that plays close to twenty instruments and he also makes many of the instruments he performs with. Some of his musical instruments can be seen on his website.
Recently, B'eirth began recording and touring under the band name, Birch Book, to compliment his endeavores in more traditional American “folk” styles. In Gowan Ring/Birch Book will continue to record and tour under both names.
