Woof

Please observe the following rules of etiquette on my talk page:

  1. Do not change content you have already posted, unless you are just doing markup on it, e.g. adding overstrikes or bolding. I know some of you always claim the right to edit things you post post facto. Please don't do that here, because I will revert your changes and be grumpy about it. Instead, add subcomments or similar.
  2. Do not refactor my page for me. I will refactor when I feel like it.
  3. Please sign any comments you make.
  4. I will possibly remove any extraneous graphics/styling you do of text here. It would be nice if you initially post without this stuff.

Thanks!

[edit] the Goat Island Extrapolation

Hi, I understand why you deleted my page the first time, because it did not explain the notability of the band. fair enough. But then I read the policies and particularly the criteria about bands with national charting, so I rebuilt my page from scratch with great care to explain how the band charted nationally in canada, so I'm not sure why you deleted the page after that. please respond on my talk page

thanks, KenGoudsward | Talk Nov 16 2006

[edit] Image Removed

Hi, you removed the Image:Http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Upload&wpDestFile=Christian Phalange and Kataeb fighters carry out military activities in Beirut 75.jpg from the articles about the kataeb party. In the licensing information for the photo I copy-pasted an email from the administrator of the site, that allowes me to use the photo. So, why did you remove it? Could you please answer the question in my talk page? Thanks :) Lizrael 17:46, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Block of Brya

Hi Improv,

I noticed a discussion on Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration#Community Ban for User:Brya. I am not an invited party, but I would like to make a statement. Coud you please advice me how to go about this? Can I just add a statement? Though I am a long time contributor to the englis wiki, I have never been in touch with this procedure.

thanks in advance,

Thx for your reply. If it is not customary, I will be extra careful. I will contemplate wether it is useful or not. TeunSpaans 08:04, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image removed 2

You removed the image at Wright Airlines with the comment "Rm image that's going away". I'd like an explanation on why the image was deleted. If you take the time to explain it then we won't have any misunderstandings in the future. There was nothing added to the talk page for the article. Mfields1 21:54, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

It was uploaded under a non-commercial license, which Wikipedia cannot use due to the advertising revenues many of its mirrors generate. These are accordingly deleted on sight. See Category:Non-commercial_use_only_images, and this page for a longer explanation. Cheers, Postdlf 22:30, 19 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Four way talks for the 21dec panel

Hi, I'd like to discuss a general outline for the Wikipedia panel as well as other issues.  :)

This is what I have at the moment. Feel free to reply, and at least acknowlege you had seen it.

Topic User Location Travel expenses
General Me (Cool Cat) - -
Wikimedia Anthere France ~1200
oscar Netherlands
Mediawiki Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason Iceland $1500-$1600
Copyrights Improv Pittsburgh, PA, USA $1167-$1399

[edit] Panel

Hey Coolcat, I got your note, but it seems that what I'm to talk about has morphed from being a discussion on policy and project goals and various ideas on that (e.g. factions) into a discussion on copyright policies on Wikipedia. I could probably still talk about that, but I don't think it'd be very interesting - copyright and related policy is a fairly dry topic. Any news on funding? Take care. --Improv 08:00, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

This isnt fixed. I had to reduce the number of panelists I am to invite to three. If you like to talk about something else, it can easily be adjusted. I just had to give an outline to the people. I did get your name right, right? --Cat out 10:58, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
Yup. My full legal name is Patrick Robert Gunn, but I universally go by "Pat Gunn". --Improv 16:06, 22 October 2006 (UTC)
I was wondering if you could write in a paragraph what you'd like to discuss in the panel. I need to submit a general outline of the panel by this monday. --Cat out 00:01, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hi Improv

Since you're an expert on images, please take a look at these two images [1] [2], they're both a collage of copy-righted images, photoshoped together by a user and then released into the public domain under "Creative Licensing". Is this allowed, can you just photoshop other people's work and release it under your own name? --ManiF 11:08, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Most of them are copy-righted, here is one with a watermark. --ManiF 20:47, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Elonka

Thank you for participating in my recent RfA. Unfortunately consensus was not reached, and the nomination was not successful. However, I do appreciate that you took the time to comment, and I paid close attention to your thoughts, as I find it a valuable thing to understand how I am perceived by others in the Wikipedia community. I do intend to continue contributing in a positive manner to Wikipedia, and if there is anything that I can do in the future to help further address your concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. --Elonka 09:39, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My RfA (reprise)

Well, it's been a week now that I've been an administrator and I'd like to take this moment to once again thank everyone who supported my RfA, and to let you all know that I don't think I've screwed anything up yet so I hope I'm living up to everyone's expectations for me. But if I ever fall short of those expectations, I'd certainly welcome folks telling me about it!

[edit] Westfield Eastgardens

Plenty of shopping centres are considered to be of encyclopedic interest by our standards these days, and regularly survive AfD, so asserting on your own that they are "not considered to be" is a bit rich. It was hardly an advert, either, considering that it was written by a regular user who considered it to be notable and not anyone involved with Westfield. There has been no AfD on this particular article, and I see no reason why it wouldn't survive one.

There was a proposal to merge all Westfield shopping centres into a group article, but it was subsequently rejected, although some newbie did it anyway and was promptly reverted. Those state articles, which contained nothing that wasn't already in the individual articles, now redirect to The Westfield Group, so I'm not sure why you keep trying to redirect Westfield Eastgardens to one of them. Rebecca 01:29, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

I'm afraid it doesn't work that way, and you should know better than to try otherwise. If you want it deleted, you nominate it for deletion - you do not get to speedy it unilaterally and then make other people have to undelete it by vote. Furthermore, you're patently abusing that speedy deletion criterion, which is meant specifically (and you're welcome to read the explanations of Jimbo, who responsible for authoring this one) for actual advertising (in this case, assumedly by Westfield), not for commercial enterprises written about by regular editors who did think they were notable, and which you want deleted but can't be bothered trying to get a consensus for. Rebecca 03:57, 28 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] First person

I notice you made an edit (History of China) to get rid of first person. I'm just curious: is there a rule in Wikipedia against using first person in cases like this? (Sorry, I'm too lazy to navigate the rules and guidelines). The first person in this particular case seemed quite normal and natural to me; one can almost imagine an eminent professor of history at a British university giving a talk just like this. Changing it to the 'impersonal voice' of 'what is known' etc. actually seems to detract from the article by making it more anodyne -- 'impersonal' in the less attractive sense of the word.

This is just an idle question, but I would be interested to know what you think about this.

[edit] Request for Protection

I would like to request that the articles Peter_Roskam and Tammy_Duckworth be protected. I would also ask that other articles regarding political candidates currently running for office be protected, but this might be something addressed on a larger scale through policy change inthe future. Considering the potential for unscupulous persons looking for an 11th hour propoganda tool or muzzle might alter, vandalize or add material from IP addresses and other ill-meaning users. The sharp rise in vandalism in these two pages makes it clear that his pattern will only increase this last week before the election.Arcayne 06:39, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] FootballMercato

Hi, You've deleted the FootballMercato article. Some other websites in the same category are even less known than our site. Wikipedia conditions mention that the site should be known by the maximum number of people. Our site has received more than 150,000 visitors from 60 countries. It should be enough to be considered as well-known. Not all sites are eBay and Wikipedia. Could you please clarify your position? Knowing all these arguments, we would like to restore that article.

--- Hi, I read your arguments but I must disagree. Knowing that there are more than 100 millions of websites in the world, this site belongs to the Top 1%. I know that it’s not in the Top 5 worldwide, but everything that is in "Top 1% of something" should enter in such an encyclopedia from my point of view. Maybe that it is your opinion that it doesn’t belong to Wikipedia, but the numbers and the logic would be for its inclusion. What do you think?

[edit] Howell Hu

Hey --- can you explain why this article doesn't deserve {{db-attack}}?? It was already listed for speedy two days ago, then the page creator removed the speedy tags. But still he hasn't offered any sources whatsoever, not even an external link, which is a direct and gross violation policy about biographies of living people. And all the article does is continually call him a "Chinese race traitor" (Hanjian) and present quotes (possibly made up) in an effort to present him in a disparaging light.

As far as I can tell (based on my google search) this article is being created as a result of a dispute between some mainland Chinese students on the UC Berkeley online forums, and this guy is not notable whatsoever.

At minimum an admin should re-stub the page and warn all contributors that they must provide a source for every edit. cab 03:29, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Looks a lot better, thanks for your quick response. I will continue watching the page and reverting unsourced edits. cab 03:47, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

I deleted the page. I know both Howell Hu and the perpetrators of this attack page. The whole thing is intended as a joke to disparage Howell. Howell is in no way notable. This is a based on a Facebook dispute. It happened when Howell Hu started an "East Asian Co-prosperity sphere" group on Facebook. Those in the pro-China "One China.....bitch" group went over to Howell's group and started disputing his premises and Howell responded by banning them from his group. And then those in the "One China.....bitch" group set up a Howell Hu fan group, using much of the language of the article, to ridicule him. Facebook deleted that group. As evidence of what everyone is up to (if you have a Facebook account): http://facebook.com/topic.php?uid=2204610154&topic=1983 and http://facebook.com/topic.php?uid=2204610154&topic=1931 --Jiang 03:58, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

And if you think Howell may possibly be notable, please refer to the first facebook link I posted. They posted his resume in that thread. Since it contains personal information, I don't want to reproduce it here. If you take at the sample quotes provided (yes, theyre really from Howell), you can tell that Howell cannot possibly be an "author of numerous papers".--Jiang 04:01, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] misunderstading with Passion (yaoi)

Hello, I would like to discuss the re-deletion of Passion (yaoi) page. I received a message saying that my work was a copy of [3] and that it was up for deletion. Which is not true, the information that I paced on that page was from the book which I own. I quickly changed (rewrote) the material, but I did not know I had to talk about these changes on the talk page Talk:Passion (yaoi). of the article.

so when the page got the deleted I presumed it was based on the first message, so I put the page again with the proper changes. The second time it was deleted I presumed, it was a computer mistake or the person that deleted it did check the changes I made. So I just wanted to make that clear, I enjoy putting information on wikipedia and since I am in college I do not have time to fully know every editing technique or rule (I just do this for fun, and to make this online encyclopedia better), please be patient with me, and thank you for messages they have been very informative.Angel,Isaac 15:43, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DARDA, Dominica American Releif and Development Association

What is going on here? I do not understand why this page keeps getting deleted. This is a non-profit organization. It is not soliciting anything (if I read the edit comment correctly). Additionally, I wrote all the content on the official website and the reworded content on the WIki page so there is no copyroght violation. What am I missing? Why do you guys keep deleting the page... and why do I keep asking this question without response? Please see last message posted to Merope's talk page...

--- Hello, I have tried on several occasions to add a page about DARDA, Dominica American Relief and Development Association to Wikipedia, yet it continues to get deleted. I am the webmaster for darda.org, a member of the organization, and I created ALL the content (text) on the website. Therefore, it is not a copyright violation for me to use my own work (with permission from DARDA) to add to the Wikipedia page. I stated this in the DARDA talk the first time it was deleted yet when I tried to recreate the article, it was deleted a second time. On my third attempt, I reworded the text, cited the material (references to darda.org) and claimed ownership of content. It was up for a few day but I noticed today that it had, again, been deleted. Can you please tell me why?

Nellie1908 04:09, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] DARDA, Dominica American Releif and Development Association

Improv, thank you for your response. I would like you (Wikipedia) to reconsider your decision to delete the DARDA page for several reasons. First, DARDA is not a "business" in that it does not generate "revenue". It is a non-profit charitable organization that raises funds for the island of Dominica. I added the page in order to provide a reference to those searching about Dominica or organizations working towards her behalf. The page was merely meant to provide information, not solicit anything. Second, by adding the page my intent was not to promote myself or my affiliations. Yes, I am a member of the organization but I am also the webmaster - responsible for web content related to the organization. I was merely trying to do my job and create a reference page for the organizatin on your well-visited site. Third, you have a page for Alpha Kappa Alpha (which I am a member of) that is a charitable organization. Therefore, what distinguishes DARDA from, say AKA, that it can not have a Wiki page but other non-profit organizations can? I appreciate your response. Nellie1908 15:07, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Club Of The Sons

Hello, I was in the middle of writing an article on Club Of The Sons, and you seem to have deleted and protected it peremptorily before I had a chance to finish or revise the article. Given what I had completed writing at the time, I could understand the speedy deletion as "CSD G11: Advertisement/Spam". However, now that you've protected the delete, it provides me no opportunity to explain the direct links to other bands Earthsuit, Mute Math, and Macrosick and how Club Of The Sons fits into their evolution. Could you please unprotect it so that I can finish my article and then evaluate whether you think it qualifies as CSD G11? Souldier77 21:14, 15 November 2006 (UTC) (sorry... forgot to sign it)

[edit] Return of the Club of the Sons

Hi, I wrote you previously about your protected deletion of Club of the Sons. Well, I took your suggestion and wrote the stub out in my userspace at User_talk:Souldier77/Club of the Sons.

I rewrote the article after looking over Wikipedia's notability requirements for music articles. Even as a stub, it satisfies the criterion for having gone on "a national concert tour in at least one large or medium-sized country" as well as having "at least one member who was once a part of or later joined a band that is otherwise notable" (it actually has two, from Sparrow Records band Earthsuit).

So please have a look at it and let me know if you would now reconsider unprotecting the page so that I can recreate it for others to expand on in the future. Thanks! Souldier77 07:21, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the update. I moved the article back, so you can delete the redirect now. I have a slightly stupid question though... What is the redirect on my userpage? And where is/was it? (Still climbing the Wikipedia learning curve). Souldier77 20:48, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] With regard to "Do You Know Me?"

You get questions like that a lot? Well, here's one more. Delete this if you like, it's just a bit of a puzzler for me.

I've come across your footprints all over Wikipedia, and because your user name is an activity that comprises much of my free time at the same University you seem to work for, I am surprised that I have no idea who you are. By all rights, I probably should.

Downright weird, that. Greyscale 12:11, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

All the more perplexed now. I have an open-mic tonight during which I might be playing... guess... the accordion. It's at the Neville Co-op from 6:30 to 8:30. You could bring yours and show me up, I've been playing for a rather pathetic amount of time. Or not. This is effectively Wikipedia spam, but it only took a few keystrokes to post that, not a heck of a lot of time wasted either way.

Pardon the randomness. Cheers. Greyscale 18:06, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Portfolio for ArbCom

On Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2006/Summary table, I added a column "Examples" with links that exhibit a candidate's arbitration skills. My motivation is that as a voter, I don't want to just rely on a candidate's words, but also see their actions. Moreover, I believe a portfolio of "model cases" to remember in difficult situations can be useful for each candidate, as well.

So far I have entered examples for the candidates who registered first (from their questions page), and I'm not sure if and when I will get to yours, so you may want to enter an example or two yourself. — Sebastian (talk) 23:50, 3 December 2006 (UTC)    (I stopped watching this page. If you would like to continue the talk, please do so here and let me know.)

[edit] A question:

How much longer should I expect to hear comments like this? I don't need to remind you about the legitimate gripes I could have about your civility here, but what, pray tell, is your issue? And furthermore, why haven't you bothered to discuss it with me instead of taking nasty little swipes along the way? By the way - I'm not wrong about our "proper channels" - we wouldn't have gotten the cookie articles back without them, and I never mentioned "rule of law," so you may want to get around to amending that statement. I look forward to some sort of dialogue. --badlydrawnjeff talk 03:01, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
