[edit] Hype vs. Encyclopedic
Welcome, hope you stick around. I appreciate your efforts to write on Seattle bands, etc., but please do try to be careful not to write "like a promoter" when you are writing for an encyclopedia. You might take a look at the article I wrote on The Squirrels to get an idea of how to do this more acceptably. Instead of praising the band in the narrative voice of the article, I quote Peter Blecha and Jim DeRogatis; to talk about their approach to arrangement, I quote lead singer Rob Morgan himself; rather than just claim that they are highly respected, I cite evidence of them being respected by John Peel.
A marginally acceptable way to get around this is to quote what you, yourself, have published elsewhere (more so if it was published somewhere that would generally be considered a reliable sources, but beware of quoting and citing your own site too much, or it will probably be seen by some as an effort at linkspamming. Yes, it gets a bit tricky). I've sometimes ended up a bit convoluted on this myself, as at Maradona (scam) where I cite http://www.expatfocus.com/avoiding-common-traveller-scams as a reference; expatfocus cites my own personal website, which (as a personal website) Wikipedia would generally not consider to meet the standards for a reliable source!
I hope that's helpful, please fell free to ask on my talk page if you have questions. -- Jmabel | Talk 21:59, 28 January 2006 (UTC)
