Imaginary is a song by the alternative rock band Evanescence. It is one of three songs that has stayed in the bands history since its EPs toward Fallen (The other two being My Immortal and Whisper). It is featured on their releases Evanescence EP, Origin, Fallen, and Anywhere but Home.
[edit] History
The first two versions (Evanescence EP & Origin) have the same lyrics, but are different musically (The EP version has a slower tempo, and begins with an acoustic guitar, while the Origin version has a piano intro). The song began its transition into what would become the Fallen version throughout two demos. ("Imaginary V.1", sometimes incorrectly named as "Imaginary (monsters)" and "Imaginary V.2") The songs are different musically and lyrically, somewhat closer to the final version. Musically, compared to the one in Fallen, there is no choir, the guitar solos are different, and the songs themselves don't sound quite as epic. Lyrically, the intro was dropped and the song starts with the first verse. While the Origin version had no bridge, "Imaginary V.1" does feature one, the second chorus in the Origin version changed lyrically. The second verse was also added in these demos. However, in the final version, the second chorus from Origin was completely dropped (both as a chorus and as a bridge) and the piano intro was placed again in the song, as the bridge. This version also features a choir.
It should be noted that yet another version exists, which is exactly the same as the one on Fallen but features the Tourniquet strings outro as an intro.
Some fans prefer the Origin version as opposed to the Fallen one, because it challenges traditional song structure. However, the Fallen version is the one preferred by Amy Lee, who insists that Origin should only be considered a demo CD.
"Imaginary" was released as an airplay single in Spain. At the same time, the track was featured in a commercial for the movie The Village.
