How do you rename users?? Georgia guy 20:44, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

It's a power given to Wikipedia:Bureaucrats. We get a special page where we can do that stuff. If you want to be renamed, see Wikipedia:Changing usernameIlyanep (Talk) 20:47, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,

Heh...well I thought i saw you before then on Wikipedia. and I'd like to shrink it but that would involve non-formatting and losing the EA link :\ Any suggestions? (like how to make the same formatting across the entire sig and have it work?) — Ilyanep (Talk) 04:07, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mind Benders

Hi Ilyanep! Just wanted to know the status of your WP:MIND questions. In case you're really lost, you can follow this simple hints:

1-Do you know a riddle you like very much? Adapt it to the context of yor article and create a question on it. 2-Redundant questions are always a good way to improve your count. Ask about something interesting or controversial in your article. 3-You can modify your article to put a code in it, then ask what is the meaning of the code you put there (of course, it will be hidden). Fetofs Hello! 13:03, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

You can also evaluate others' pages (just like you did with yours). Please don't cheat. Fetofs Hello! 22:18, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Karmafist's Request

I have a request of my fellow candidates, and of the voters -- that all candidates give a vote to every other candidate.

It may seem that this request goes against the idea that leadership and potential leadership of our group should be neutral, a precedent that has been followed since the beginning of Esperanza by JCarriker, but I beg to disagree.

For one, mathematically all votes would be cancelled out, but unlike if we stayed silent, we are showing an affirmation of our support for each other.

To me, that's what Esperanza's about. I've had disagreements with many people in Esperanza, but i'll always support them in some form or another as long as I believe as they'll do the same for me -- as long as we're unified in a belief that kindness can cure the ills of Wikipedia as a whole.

[edit] Delete Accounts

Hi. You have a problem with one of your administrators User:Morven. Will you be able to delete my accounts? I've contacted User:Cecropia before but have not heard anything back from him/her either. I've been attacked, trolled and accused of vandalism by User:Geo Swan and by your administrator User:Morven and User:Fred Bauder. I disagree and was not allowed to formally bring this issue up before the arbitration committee. Neither of these individuals have just cause for blocking my accounts and for their personal attacks - especially User:Geo Swan who I suspect has Sysop privileges and is a sockpuppet as well. Unless these folks believe adding Wikipedia:Userboxes to a user page is an act of vandalism. I've also pointed out to Geo Swan that he/she has been using Wikipedia for promotional and advertisement for the Simon & Schuster Clan.

Again, these are the accounts submitted for deletion:

If there are problems with this request, then leave a message on my talk page User:Ariele.,,,,,Ariele 02:59, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Not all TIME images

Check WP:IFD. You'll notice a considerable number I have put through this process, these are mostly images that have no fair use criteria. Try to remember that we have no other review process for fair use images at the moment. I've also kept several of them as they are in fact being used as fair use correctly. I perhaps made one mistake on the Pak Wars (? can't remember article) image, for which I have apologised to the uploading editor. - Ta bu shi da yu 01:44, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Ya. I don't delete images for fun you know! If we had a situation in the world today where we could legally and morally use other people's images for whatever reason, I'd be very happy. Unfortunately such a utopia does not exist, despite the best efforts of GNU and RMS. - Ta bu shi da yu

[edit] Category:Northern Irish Formula One drivers

It appears that you deleted this category with no consensus, nor any discussion regarding the reason. Now, after I had created the category, others appear to have attempted a clean-up of articles relating to it, which has effectively wasted my time. You cite WP:CSD, point 2 as reason: Speedy renaming. Empty categories that have qualified for speedy renaming.

    1. Typo fixes (e.g., Brdiges -> Bridges), but not changes between British and American spelling.
    2. Capitalization fixes (e.g., characters In harry Potter -> Characters in Harry Potter)
    3. Conversions from singular to plural, or back (e.g., Steamship -> Steamships)
    4. Renaming to conform with the "by country" categorization conventions
    5. Abbreviation expanding for country names, e.g. changing "U.S." to "United States"

However, the category Northern Irish Formula One drivers falls into none of them. The closest category above to which I can see it falling into is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (categories).. but the category I created conforms to the naming conventions - particularly to the use of collective demonyms. --Mal 01:58, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

When I deleted it, the category said per Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2005_September_9#Northern_Irish: "The result of the debate was Rename all.". Sorry for any confusion I caused. If it hasn't been renamed then you can create another one under a better name. BTW, the category was empty too. — Ilyanep (Talk) 02:33, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Hullo again. I had included all three Northern Irish Formula One drivers in the category... so unless someone had engaged in vandalism/revert warring, the category was not empty. I'm not sure about that debate, as it seems to have recieved only three votes. My point about the standardisation in line with the other constituent countries of the UK remains though.

To be honest, I'm pretty unsure what to do about this. Logic dictates to me that the category should be renamed.. or that all the other similar categories be renamed. It would of course, be helpful if you could undo the deletion and create some kind of voting page or discussion page for the category. Thanks. --Mal 02:44, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Well since you dispute the deletion, I don't mind recreating it, and you can use the category's talk page to figure out what to do. I'm pretty sure the cat was empty though, so I'd check up on that. — <span style="font-variant:Small-caps;color:black;">Ilyanep (Talk) 02:48, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks again Ilyanep. I appreciate it. --Mal 02:56, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Does It Really Matter?

Does it really matter how long an article is? I mean, how long do things have to be in order NOT to get deleted? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Atlanta2003 (talkcontribs).

IS this a rhetorical question or referring to something you wrote? Basically, you want the subject to be notable. It doesn't matter how long the article is, since we can always improve things on notable and verifiable subjects. A good rule of thumb is WP:N which shows what most people consider notable. — Ilyanep (Talk) 21:02, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Yes..

Well, I'm sorry my Good Day Live article couldnt be book report length. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Atlanta2003 (talkcontribs).

The reason that particular article was deleted was because all it said was that it was a show with certain hosts that aired in a certain timeframe and was cancelled due to poor ratings. But, what channel did it air on? What exactly was it about? This is the sort of context we want; context that establishes the notability of the subject. Don't worry about the length (I've seen stubs with one sentence in them), rather the content and context. — Ilyanep (Talk) 21:26, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Star Trek Characters

What is the policy for {{Star Trek character}} in regards to rank? Some characters are promoted/demoted during the course of a series; is the most recent rank or highest rank listed? I think most recent probably makes the most sense. I was just wondering after seeing the articles on Miles O'Brien, Tom Paris, and Tuvok. — Ilyanep (Talk) 01:05, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, Care to help? I am overwriting Template:ST character with Template:Star Trek character. I am displaying the most recent rank as in the latest rank the person appeared with or is cited to carry the rank (Hoshi Sato's rank is exceptionaly problematic).
I am extremely unhappy and think will stay that way until I regain control of #wikipedia-en-vandalism and make my bot to function again without interuptions or risk of interuptions due to "channel policy". Staring at the second monitor is enough to infuriate me.

Hey! Nice to meet another teenaged Wikipedian :) I joined May 2003, and I'm totally a Wikipediholic :P. Currently I go to Glenbard North High School, but I have hopes of getting into the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy starting next year. My fingers are crossed like you don't believe. I was in a gifted program from 5th-8th grade, and now I'm in a bunch of honors classes. How about you? — Ilyanep (Talk) 22:05, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
I was in a gifted program from 6th-8th grade, and wow did I love it. I had all gifted classes, with only other gifted kids. But I moved to Guam, and I'm on a military base now. Unsurprisingly, the classes are not very high-level, and I am only in honors world history and honors world literature. I am into physics, especially nanophysics, and will go to the University of Central Florida for a bachelors degree in nanophysics. Uhm... what's up?
Heh. I totally love honors classes and I would fall asleep in a non-honors class. I plan to double-major in Computer Science and Mathematics and minor in Music and hopefully I can get into MIT (I'm applying!) and then I'm going on to get a master's degree in Computer Science. Nothing really is up, I'm just bored (and happy) now that it's spring break. — Ilyanep (Talk) 23:06, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, it isn't spring break here yet. I like to play Halo. :) I am also extremely interested in lucid dreaming and sleep, since I am a natural, extremely frequent lucid dreamer. Its the weekend now! yeah! -- User:Mac_Davis
I haven't ever had a lucid dream and I've been quite interested in those :\ — Ilyanep (Talk) 02:24, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

What? No halo? Any PC games? I like the Age of Empires series and halo. I'm a total pirater now, and don't pay for anything. Haha, I'm trying to get Mathematica 5.2 right now. I love my TI-84. The TI-89 looks really cool too. I write my own 84 programs, its fun. What kinda books do you like to read? Do you get the Science Channel where you live? My dad was born in Illinois.

I don't own an X-Box, but I do play Halo 2 and CoD 2 when I get a chance. On my own computer, I play Battlefield 2 a lot as well as Medal of Honor:Allied Assault (an oldie but a goodie; I belong to a clan). I also like many rts games. I own a TI-84 for school and I've written a lot of programs that have to do with Geometry. I want to get a TI-89 soon because of the equasion solver [of course I wrote my own program that uses the quadratic formula :P]. I like to read science fiction books a lot. Currently, I'm actually reading The DaVinci Code, but that's just because the movie is coming out soon. I don't believe I get the Science channel where I live. — Ilyanep (Talk) 16:21, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
lol me too. Do you have a TI-84 plus ? Cause I have an equation solver on my TI-84 plus. My RAM just got two weeks ago and I lost all my programs. My programs are for Chemistry and math. to find y or m or x or b in y=mx+b or to find a in y=ab^x. In Chemistry it does all my stoichiometry homework now. :) Ha, I read the DaVinci Code 2.5 years ago, right now I am reading DUNE, the first book. -- User:Mac_Davis
Oh, my mistake. I have an 83. I don't believe the 84 has an equasion solver though, because it's simply an upgrade of the 83. Maybe yours came preloaded with certain apps. I think it's fun to write my own programs for the 83 -- i just do it when bored. — Ilyanep (Talk) 00:24, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
All TI-84s come with and equation solver last on the MATH menu. I thought TI-83s came with it too. Oh you know what, I don't think I got the polysolver app preloaded. But I like the equation solver better anyway. -- Mac Davis] ⌇☢ ญƛ. 04:26, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 1410 & 810 AM near Crystal Lake

I just ran across your old questions about two AM stations near Crystal Lake on Talk:List of radio stations in Illinois, and I replied. Hope it helps. --Closeapple 12:22, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Hmm...I'd forgotten I asked that lol. Thanks for answering :) — Ilyanep (Talk) 16:18, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #1

Reach out is a program aimed at allowing users to bring issues that they have had in Wikipedia to a listening, sympathetic and caring audience:
"No one can know how we feel if we do not say. We cannot expect to get understanding if we do not ask for it. No one will dispute that sometimes life's issues are too much for one person. It is fair to say that sometimes Wikipedia's problems fall under the same heading. This is a place where you can bring the bruises that can sometimes be got on this project for attention."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Note from the editor
Welcome to this new format of the Esperanza Newsletter, which came about during the last Advisory Council meeting - we hope you like it! The major changes are that each month, right after the Council meeting, this will be sent out and will include two featured programs and a sum up of the meeting. Also, it will be signed by all of the Advisory Council members, not just Celestianpower. Have an Esperanzial end of March, everyone!
  1. Future meetings are to be held monthly, not fortnightly as before.
  2. Bans and Access level changes (apart from autovoice) in the IRC channel are to be reported at the new log.
  3. In the IRC channel, there is going to be only one bot at a time.
  4. The charter requires members to have 150 edits and 2 weeks editing. Why this is the case will be clarified.
  5. A new Code of Conduct will be drafted by JoanneB and proposed to the Esperanza community.
  6. The NPA reform idea is to be dropped officially.
  7. Charter ammendments are to be discussed in future, not voted on.
  8. The Advisory Council is not going to be proposed to be expanded by the Advisory Council themselves, if others want to propose it, they will listen.
Signed...

[edit] Call Of Duty 2 Alterations

Dude, I've no idea why you've removed my edit to the COD2 page and would like an explanation please. I updated the page with current information, seeing as the patch for the XBox 360 was released several days ago. Your re-edit completely removes this and makes the article stale again, anyone reading it would think that the patch has still to come out. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a resource like this when fresh information can't be updated. The glitch again was a big thing to the Xbox version, check out the Xbox forums, almost every other thread was relating to the glitch in some manner. In fact, the only problem with COD2 was the online problems and the glitch sorted it. So why have no mention to it at all? Should we pretend it was never there? What about map glitches? Some people like myself are interested in things like this because when we see people doing dodgy stuff (like entering buildings they're not supposed to be able to) we like to research it to see what's going on.

So, all in all, I'm completely confused as to why you reverted my edits and would like an explanation please - if not only to educate myself as to what is an acceptable edit. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by JamShady (talkcontribs).

Sorry if I didn't make myself very clear. The reason I reverted was because the language was a little loaded and offered no citation for any glitches or information that you added. If you'd like more information, you can check out WP:CITE. Also, welcome to Wikipedia :) — Ilyanep (Talk) 02:38, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Good grief, is that it? Well, I have absolutely no idea what you mean by the language was loaded, but as for citations, it's fairly common knowledge. I'm sorry if you're not aware of this, but that gives you no right to pretend it doesn't exist. Firstly, the path was released. I know because I have an Xbox 360 and it's a mandatory update - you CANNOT play the game without, and MILLIONS of people have downloaded it. But if you really want a citation, then here it is: http://forums.xbox.com/3151291/ShowPost.aspx - You'll notice it was written March 21st, quite some time ago in the internet world! The glitch and lag issues aren't going to be formally recorded anywhere because it can only come from Infinity Ward or MS and can you honestly see them publishing a public announcement as to how bad the game is? Thus there are no "official" announcements to this effect, other than what Infinity Ward posted to say the patch would fix (thus the lag problems are clearly known to them since that's what they're working on). What I posted was fact, and can be easily checked by checking the Xbox forums. I played the game and I know how bad it can get, as well as the causes. The glitch is also common place fact as well, I don't see why a citation is needed, it's not like it's something so extraordinary it's unbelievable. In fact, I actually posted a link to an article that I wrote on the issue which detailed the causes of the problems, how to resolve them, and how to execute the glitch. The same information is also posted in several other websites. I notice you've left the comment about Infinity Ward receiving protests from gamers in. Whilst it's true, it's not cited. It even has a link there requesting a citation. If you want proof I can supply it, but for you to go and revert the edits and pretend it never happened because you never saw it or experienced it is rediculous. Tell me, do you have any proof that what I wrote was wrong, even in the slightest? Was it exageratted, did it represent personal opinion in any manner? I think you'll find it was all fact. There is a difference. So on that, I'm going to revert it back to my edit and I'll thank you to research your information first before cancelling edits. I find it quite ironic that a site designed to propagate information can be abused by someone who chooses to remain ignorant and spread that ignorance over the masses instead of attempting to discover the truth.
I left your edits, but I cleaned it up. Also, while you say it was officials on the forums, I think it'd be better to steer clear of ref'ing forums. — Ilyanep (Talk) 22:37, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup Taskforce

Regarding Wikipedia:Cleanup Taskforce/The Robot Ate Me. I suggested AfDing it, because I can not find any information anywhere. What are your thoughts? — Ilyanep (Talk) 18:33, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't have a lot of experience with WP:MUSIC. If it doesn't meet the criteria then I'd say go ahead and list it at AFD. RJFJR 02:31, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Prodego

I was right in the middle of closing the nomination when you edit conflicted me on it; I had a number of tabs open, and was waiting for the RFA to save at the same time I was setting rights. Oy! Essjay TalkContact 22:31, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Haha sorry! I thought something was fishy when I was setting the rights and it told me he was already an admin. I looked back and saw that nobody had moved the nom, though, so I went ahead and did it :D — Ilyanep (Talk) 22:34, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin closure

Essjay was closing my RFA as you left me the note, that's why the page wasn't moved of WP:RFA yet; thanks though!

Haha! No problem and congrats :) — Ilyanep (Talk) 22:35, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My RfA

Hi Ilyanep. Just wanted to say thanks for closing my RfA and for the notes on my talk page. Cheers TigerShark 04:25, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Esperanza Newsletter #2

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."
The Stress alerts program aims at identifying users who are stressed, alerting the community of thier stress and works in tandem with the Stressbusters at trying to identify causes of stress and eliminating them.
Information
Welcome to the second issue of the new format Esperanza Newsletter - we hope you still like it! This week, it was delivered diligently by our new dogsbody. MiszaBot (run by Misza13): any execution complaints should go to him. Content comments should be directed at the Esperanza talkpage. Thanks!
  1. The next elections: Approval voting as before and, also as before, an previous leadership member can run. Please submit your name for voting in the relevant section of this page. Voting starts on 2006-04-23 and ends on 2006-04-30. There will be three places up for grabs as KnowledgeOfSelf is leaving Wikipedia. Please see the previously linked page for full details.
  2. The Code of Conduct is now ready for extensive discussion! Specific comments should go to the Code of Conduct talk page, discussion of having one at all should be directed to the main Esperanza talk page.
  3. The current process for accepting proposals for new programs has been deemed fine. All Advisory Council members and the Admin Gen are to endevour to be bold when viewing discussion. If they feel that consensus has been reached, they will act accordingly.
A plea from the editor...
The propsed programs page is terribly underused! Please leave any comments, good or bad, on the page, to help us determine the membership's thoughts on the ideas there.
