[edit] The Humungous Image Tagging Project

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit] Return of the Untagged Image project

You were kind enough to contribute to the Wikipedia:Untagged images project; I beg to draw your attention to part 2 of the project - there are about 12,000 more images in need of tagging. Any assistance you could provide would be most welcome. thanks --Tagishsimon (talk)

[edit] California meetup

I'll be over in Calif. for a few days -- perhaps a chance to meet? See Wikinews:Meetup/California.--Eloquence* 00:33, July 18, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] First ever Los Angeles Wikipedia meetup, Monday night!

Greetings. I wanted to make sure that you knew about the L.A. Wiki meetup that's happening Monday night. Are you coming? Check out the page, if you're interested. - Eric 11:09, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. I'll stop by. -- IlyaHaykinson 16:04, 23 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] L.A. Meetup Reminder

Don't forget! L.A's first Wiki meetup is TONIGHT at 7:30 at Philippe's in Downtown. Check out the meetup page for details. See you there! (If you can't make it, come to the next one! - Eric 22:04, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

Alas, wasn't able to make it. Thanks for the invite. Will sign up for the next one. -- IlyaHaykinson 05:43, 26 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] DynamicPageList

Hi Ilya, I think the DPL technology would be great to replace the administratively heavy work of Stub sub-categories.

Currently there is a complex structure and rules for creating and deleting stub types requiring a great deal of labour and the development of a bit of an elite that understands and monitors the creation of stub types: WikiProject Stub sorting/Criteria.

Using DPL, I think we could revert to having all stubs in Category:Stubs and replace the stub sub-category pages with DPL pages of interest (say Category:California and Category:Stubs) and Users could create their own specialised DPL lists on their user page (say Category:Los Angeles and Category:Death rock and Category:Stubs).

What say you? Is it a reasonable application? Cheers! DoubleBlue (Talk) 15:10, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

I think that this is a good use of the extension; however, I see the following disadvantages:
  • The DPL lists can get long, resulting in large pages.
  • Unlike now, there would be no easy way to go from a stub article to a list of stubs in a particular category. Thus, for example, on Giant burrowing frog I can click on the link to Category:Reptile and amphibian stubs and see all such stubs. With the DPL this would be tougher.
  • The current stub templates would have to be replaced with more generic templates, and a library of images. Something like {{stub|type} could be used, though.
Other than that, I think it's a good idea! -- IlyaHaykinson 00:50, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply Ilya.

  • I'm not sure that the length of DPL pages need be an issue. The stub types would correspond precisely with the categories given in the article. For example, Giant burrowing frog would end up in a DPL page that lists Australian animals stubs or Frogs stubs or even, if desired, combining the two, Australian frogs stubs. If it's decided that someone wants a Wikipedia:Animal stubs, then that page could be constructed with a DPL for each sub-category which would result in some 2500 stub articles, I believe. Since that's too large, Wikipedia:Animal stubs could then be a sort of dab to the sub-category pages. (Perhaps DPL extension could be altered to permit the choice of AND or OR sorting so that a page could be constructed with all articles matching any of the categories listed.)
  • It's true that the stub category link at the bottom is handy for finding related stubs. I think this could be remedied by having a link to related stub DPL-generated pages on the cat page. For example, The Category:Frogs page would have a link at the top for Wikipedia:Frog stubs (or perhaps a new namespace like: Stubs:Frogs ?). The Category:Stubs page should also have a tree showing the list of stub DPL pages created.
  • My suggestion was to delete all stub templates except {{Stub}} and use a generic stub message like This article is a stub. You can help by expanding it. and a generic image. The {{stub|type}} idea is interesting. You could certainly use it to say This Frogs article is a stub. and even have it link to Stubs:Frogs, replicating the usefulness of the former category link at the bottom, but I don't know how you could get a pic to go along with it.

How does one go about developing this proposal? DoubleBlue (Talk) 16:37, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

Fair enough about the page length and your other points.
For what it's worth, you could easily have a template with images. The template would just have a [[Image:{{{2}}}]]], so you could do {{stub|frogs|frog-stub.png}} or something similar.
How to go about doing this? Well, you first need to convince some developers to enable the DPL on en.Wikipedia. I suggest asking brion, specifically — you can often catch him on irc in #mediawiki or other channels. -- IlyaHaykinson 21:24, 2 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] wikimusic

Hi, Ilya, I saw you showed once interest in Wikimusic (at meta). I try to restart the discussion, maybe you would like to give some comment. Now it's still in the orientating phase, I just try to find out what would be wanted by whitch users, who would like to cooporate and maybe even in what way the think wikimusic would be usable. Please add your comment at this page in my Dutch userspace, even if you have nothing to say :P. Please add comments directly to me not at en.wp, because I am here very rare. effeietsanders 14:15, 7 October 2005 (UTC)
