Talk:Ilya Smirin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I presume that "Ilia" and "Ilya" are different ways of transliterating the same (originally Russian) name. I wrote an article on Ilya Smirin without knowing that the Ilia Smirin one existed. The two obviously should be merged under one name or the other. Which one? I don't know about other countries, but in the U.S. at least "Ilya" is the way I normally see it written. FIDE, however, lists it under "Ilia" -- which might make it appropriate to put the article under that spelling. Brittle heaven, in the Ilya Smirin history, wrote, "Please note this page is effectively a duplicate of Ilia Smirin. Someone ought to delete that one as this is better and the name more popular." Brittle heaven is English, so maybe "Ilya" is the usual spelling in the U.K., too. Accordingly, I propose putting the article under Ilya Smirin, with Ilia Smirin redirecting there. I don't have a marked preference, though, so if people think it's better to have the article under Ilia Smirin instead, that's OK, too. Krakatoa 15:05, 20 October 2006 (UTC)

No need to delete, it should be merged and then made a redirect. I'll do that now. (Agree with your analysis of Ilia vs. Ilya -- normally I'd go with what FIDE uses, but it seems Ilya Smirin is more common in the English speaking world. It could always be changed later to go the other way.) 24.177.112.146 06:39, 21 October 2006 (UTC)
