Iliya/Ilija Markov Popgeorgiev, better known as Ilyo Voyvoda/Iljo Vojvodata, is a Bulgarian revolutionary, who is considered a national hero in both the Republic of Macedonia and Bulgaria. He was born on 28 May 1805 in Berovo, today in the Republic of Macedonia, in the poor farmer family of Marko Popgeorgiev. He is a near-mythical figure and has been the subject of many folk songs. He is also called Kara Iliya, Ilyo Berovchanina, Ilyo Haramiyata, Ilyo Shopa, Ilyo/Iljo Malashevski, dyado Ilyo/dedo Iljo, kapitan Ilyo, Iljo aramijata, Iljo Berovecot etc.[citation needed]
