Ilam District

Ilam district, a part of Mechi zone, is one of the seventy-five districts of Nepal, a landlocked country of South Asia. The district, with Ilam as its district headquarters, covers an area of 1,703 sq km and has a population (2001) of 282,806. Famous worldwide for its tea gardens, Ilam is an argiculturally prosperous hilly district. Known for its greenery and hardworking people, Ilam has motorable roads connecting all VDCs. The highest point is Sandakpur with lies on an elevation of 3000m. View from Sandarpur is mindblowing, and attracts many tourists. Ilam also attracts many reserachers who come here to research on rare birds, and very less known Red Panda. Ilam stretches from Terai belt to the the upper hilly belt of this Himalayan nation. So its vegetation ranges from coconut trees to coniferous trees. Mai Pokhari is a pond in Ilam which attracts both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. Shreeantu shikhar is another place in Ilam which is worth visiting at. It is famous for its beautiful view of sunrise, and is considered to be better than the Tiger hill of nearby Darjeeling. Ilam also holds a potential for mountain biking and hiking in largescale level.

Many other rare vehicles like this Land Rover can be seen in Ilam. In fact Ilam may hold a potential for offroading as well.
