Ilakaka is the small town in the south western part of Madagascar. In 1990s there were only about 40 residents in the area. But with discovery of world class alluvial sapphire deposits in the valley in 1998 population has boom to a near 60,000 in 2005. Gem found here are considered as good as that of Sri Lankan gems.
