Il matrimonio segreto

Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage) is an opera by Domenico Cimarosa. The libretto, based on the play The Clandestine Marriage by George Colman the Elder and David Garrick, is by Giovanni Bertati. It was first performed on 7 February 1792 in Vienna.
A widely popular example of opera buffa in its day, it continues to be performed all over the world. The plot follows a standard format of the genre in its improbable situations, disguises and happy ending. While not exhibiting the profundity of Mozart's operas, taken on its own terms Il Matrimonio Segreto is a captivating and satisfying example of 18th century opera buffa.
