Ikepod

Ikepod is a Swiss watch manufacturer set up in 1994, owned by Oliver Ike and Marc Newson, and specialising in conceptual timepieces and chronometers.

Arguably the most unusual name in the world of watchmaking, Ikepod watches are a design anomaly. Perhaps no other timepiece leaps into the new millennium as gracefully and uniquely as Ikepod, with its high-tech materials, completely mechanical movements and futuristic appeal. The brainchild of a young Swiss entrepreneur and one of the world's top designers, Ikepod timepieces are the epitome of form, function and design innovation. Founded in 1994, Ikepod Watch Company was but a glint in the eye of Swiss businessman Oliver Ike. It was Ike's dream to create a line of watches that would focus on, and remain committed to, technical perfection and incredibly advanced designs. Ike created his business plan and began searching for the right designer. He particularly admired the futuristic Pod designs of Marc Newson, renowned furniture and interior designer. Newson - considered one of the most accomplished and influential designers of this generation - had already worked in a wide range of disciplines, creating everything from chairs, to glassware, bicycles, restaurant and private jet interiors.

Ike approached Newson with his concept. Intrigued, the Australian designer quickly agreed to become the sole designer of the new mechanical timepiece line. A partnership was formed and the Ikepod brand (named for Oliver Ike and for Newson's signature Pod design style) was born. The match was an immediate win/win partnership and, today Ikepod is fast gaining international recognition as a watch line with which to be reckoned.

Every watch is designed by Newson in his individualistic style, and some even sport his signature bright orange color as an accent. The watches are created only in limited edition series, further enhancing the value and increasing the intrigue of the line. Each watch (with the exception of the newest Manatee) has a pod-like design case shape and natural rubber straps infused with a vanilla scent. Leather straps, steel, or gold bracelets are also available on certain models.

In late 2003 Ikepod filed for bankruptcy protection in the Swiss court system. Their assets were quickly bought up, and now the new parent company is deciding on the future strategy for Ikepod.

The Ikepod brand will relaunch in November 2006.
