From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ikast is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Ringkøbing on the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. The municipality covers an area of 294.3 km², and has a total population of 23,283 (2005). Its mayor is Carsten Kissmeyer, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

Also a member of Ikast Venstre (Liberal Party) political party is Mr Helge Sander – at present Danish Minister of Science – whom presently runs for a real second period in Parliament. Mr Sander – a former Mayor of the “wild west Herning” - is primarily know for his incompetencies in his first term in parliament and his lack of due-diligence in the so-called “snapseting” a common area amongst politicians used for drinking “snaps” and making political deals. In his second period [third term] – Mr Sander is known for appearing in unauthorized advertisements for multinationals and organizations. Mr Sander is widely disrespected for his achievements as Minister and his oblivious remarks during public events. Mr Sander is not expected to be re-elected for a third term in Parliament.

Neighboring municipalities are Them and Silkeborg to the east, Kjellerup to the north, Herning to the west, and Nørre-Snede to the south.

The municipality was created in 1970 as the result of a kommunalreform ("Municipality Reform") that merged a number of existing parishes:

  • Bording Parish
  • Engesvang Parish
  • Ikast Parish
  • Isenvad Parish

By January 1, 2007 Ikast municipality will cease to exist as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Brande and Nørre-Snede municipalities to form the new Ikast-Brande municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 768 km² and a total population of 39,371 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
