[edit] Overview
1987 was considered by many to be a good year for thrash metal. Following influential releases from Metallica and Slayer the previous year, a whole plethora of new bands began springing up in Europe as well as the U.S. – and on this offering, Sacred Reich were arguably one of the best of the new crop.
Other releases in this year came from established bands like Anthrax, Celtic Frost, and Helloween. Also Testament and Death, who played a different brand of thrash metal, brought out debut albums.
Ignorance was popular from the start, with its ultrafast rhythms showing a technical adeptness not often encountered on debut albums. Tracks like "Death Squad", "Violent Solutions", and the title-track became instant hits for fans who were awaiting the release of the next Reign in Blood – and there was almost no let up in the tempo save for an instrumental and a couple of more mid-paced mosh songs towards the end.
The tracks "Victim of Demise" and "Rest in Peace" even shared elements of the fledgling thrash off-shoot, death metal, which was gaining popularity through the Death release. However, Phil Rind's vocal style was at the other end of the scale to the death grunt – sitting somewhere in the middle ground occupied by James Hetfield and Joey Belladonna rather than the high-pitched screaming prevalent in other heavy metal bands at the time.
