Integrated Gate Commutated Thyristor (IGCT) is modern high-power semiconductor device. It can be used as a contollable power switch. It is a special type of thyristor similar to GTO. It can be turned on and off by the gate signal, has lower conduction loss compared to GTOs and withstands higher dv/dt rise, so no snubber is required for most applications. The IGCTs also manages much lower turn-off times compared to GTOs which allows to operate them on higher frequencies, up to 40kHz for very short time, but because of high switching losses, typical operating frequency is 500Hz.
The main applications are in variable frequency inverters, drives and traction.
