Ifor of Gwynedd

In the fictional universe of the Deryni novels by Katherine Kurtz, Ifor Haldane was the sixth King of Gwynedd, reigning from 794 to 822. King Ifor was the last Haldane king before the Festillic Interregnum.
Ifor Augarin Niall Haldane was born on April 11, 778, the son of King Bearand Haldane and his second wife, Queen Aisling Kincaid. He succeeded his father upon King Bearand's death in 794 and was formally crowned King of Gwynedd on March 8, 795. Concerned that his knowledge of the world was incomplete, Ifor visited the realms of Bremagne, Rum, Byzantyun, and other Eastern locations in 797 and 799, a remarkable journey for a reigning king to embark upon while traveling incognito. His journeys exposed the king to numerous new technologies and sciences, many of which he introduced throughout Gwynedd upon his return. He reformed the administration of the government, improved the horticultural diversity of the realm, and implemented new farming and methods throughout the kingdom. Ifor was largely successful in revolutionizing many aspects of life in Gwynedd, and was almost single-handedly responsible for advancing the agricultural sciences of his kingdom. In 808, Ifor made a pilgrimage to the Anvil of the Lord to give thanks for the birth of his son and heir, Prince Jashan.
Ifor's reign may have eventually been one of the finest and most productive reigns in history had it not been interrupted. In 822, Prince Festil of Torenth launched a surprise invasion of Gwynedd, sneaking hundreds of troops into Rhemuth to strike directly at the heart of the kingdom. Ifor was killed in the attack, as was most of the royal family, and the House of Haldane was deposed from the throne of Gwynedd. The only survivor was Ifor's youngest son, the 2-year-old Prince Aidan, who was snuck out of the palace by a servant and raised in secrecy. King Ifor Haldane was killed on June 21, 822, at the age of 44. He was succeeded by King Festil I Furstán.
