If We Make It Through December

"If We Make It Through December" is one of the trademark songs of country music superstar Merle Haggard. Written in 1973, it treats, with Haggard's characteristically simple poetry, the desperate optimism of a working class man dealing with economic hardship. The chorus, "If we make it through December/Everything will be alright I know" is hopeful, but hopeful because the protagonist has to tell himself that hope exists if he hopes to deal with "the coldest time of winter." The song spent four weeks at number one on the country charts, and even cracked the top 30 on the pop charts.
