Ice Hockey Division I World Championships

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ice Hockey Division I World Championships are an annual sports event organized by the International Ice Hockey Federation. The division championships are played in two groups.

The two national teams that lose the relegation round at the Ice Hockey World Championships are relegated to Division I for next year's world championships. At the Division I championships, the winner of each group is promoted to next year's Ice Hockey World Championships, while the loser of each group is relegated to the Ice Hockey Division II World Championships.

The Division I world championships have been played in their current format since 2001, when Division I was formed from teams from Pool B and C.
