The IBM Electromatic Typewriter was the first commercially successful electric typewriter. It was introduced by the Electromatic Typewriter Company which was purchased by IBM in 1933. Unlike the later IBM Selectric typewriter, this typewriter model used a conventional moving carriage and hammer mechanism.
