[edit] RE:Previews vs. frequent saving
Hi Ian, thanks for the the tip. This is something I'm now doing as I'm getting the hang of wiki. With the Saints (which, by the way, I'd love to do more with.) I was having trouble trying to some of the images and info box stuff to show up currectly. Are these user talk boxes the best way to comunicate to other users? Thanks for your help (Talk) 11:42, 2 September 2006.
- No prob. I think that'd be great if you did more on The Saints. I expanded it a fair bit ages ago and have more stuff to add but need to verify/source some of it, so don't be shy. Yep, the User Talk pages are best for general communications with users that may not be related to a specific article (such as my thing about frequent saving, I noticed it on The Saints page but my point was a general editing one). If it's something that's directly related to the content or style of an article, then best use the article's Talk page. If you 'watch' an article, then any posts to that article's Talk page will also come up on your watchlist (I have the 'Watch this page' checkbox switched on by default when I edit; you can set this in My Preferences - Editing if you haven't already). [edit] POV Fan-boy hell
Ian Rose, with all due respect, I have been looking at some of your contributions to wikipedia, they are full of alarming POV and wholly lacking in neutrality. Let me remind you that wikipedia is not some kind of fanzine vantity project. Here is a typical example: 'Surprisingly, perhaps, Numan was able to make "On Broadway" completely his own, incorporating a stupendous sythesizer solo which conveyed a longing and a poignancy that went far beyond the song's well-known lyrics.' Catch a hold of yourself, man!
-
- Feline1, with equal respect, I'm more than happy to get reality checks on the stuff I write, as I hope we all are in this community. Judging by the number of additions/corrections I've noticed in the couple of months I've been contributing, a fair number of wikipedians have been through the articles I've written or expanded without being similarly 'alarmed' by such "fanzine vanity". But you're entitled to your POV and I do agree about the bit you've quoted which was over the top - though you've mentioned an early version of it that's different to the current wording which gives credit to Billy Currie. Well and good - I'm planning to do another pass of all the Numan articles in any case to insert text boxes and covers and will obviously be reviewing their current content at the same time. Cheers! - that's because, with all due disrespect to a lot of the people who chip in on wikipedia, particularly on pop music articles, they ARE a bunch of fan-boys with an average age of about 14, and I wouldn't take their lack of editorial rigour to be a validation of anything! Please remember that you should not be writing subjective statements based on personal taste. At most, a comment along the lines of "many critics have noted" or "some fans have cited" etc etc.--feline1 10:21, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] RE: Bowie songs
Hello there Ian.
Thanks for the message! I have been thinking about what to do with the references. My "source" now is some kind of encyclopedia that I made for myself 5-6 years ago. Here I collected information from several sources, mainly internet sites and such. Sadly I didn't note what sources I used then, so I will try to keep to the more "technical" stuff like different releases and versions. And I will be consistent with the album and song titles. I will go over the songs I have added so far and fix this.
And of course...feel free do change whatever you want. Cheers, frokor 19:22, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Sydney crime figures
Hi, Ian. Thanks for your message. I hope I haven't stepped on any toes with Neddy. There's still a lot more that could be added...there's so much information available about him. At the moment I'm working on Chris Flannery and thinking about Danny Chubb and Peter Allen. That's great you're working on Blue Murder as I have been very surpised that it did not even have a stub. Cheers for your message. Sarah Ewart (Talk) 00:57, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- Hi Ian. Abo Henry or Mick Drury are both very deserving of articles, especially Drury. I have his book, so if you don't have access to it and find you need info, let me know and I'll make some notes for you. A relative of mine (Steve Bastoni) actually played the part of Drury in Blue Murder, so I'm looking forward to seeing your article about the mini-series. I agree it would be good to collaborate or at least let each other know what we're doing so we don't double up. Thanks for getting in touch with me, I appreciate it. [edit] John Foxx
Hi. I notice you have commented that the link to Vladimir Bogdanov was misplaced. As far as I can see Vladimir Bogdanov is one of the editors of All Music Guide to Electronica. Is there another reason why linking there is misplaced; is there a related policy I havent read? just curious. Jayvdb 12:36, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
- Hi mate, yes I was referring to Bogdanov when I said the link was incorrect. Not your fault, I know the article says he's an editor of AMG but I find it difficult to believe that's the same guy who runs a Russian oil company - and you might note that the veracity of that claim has been questioned on the article's talk page by someone else as well. Until/unless someone can prove they're the same guy, I think it's safer to assume they're different and therefore there should be no link between the AMG author in the John Foxx article and the Bogdanov article. Cheers, Ian Rose 13:26, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
- I did think it a bit strange, but dismissed my concerns when I saw the same link used on All Music Guide. You are right, its more likely to be a mistake. I've left a comment on the AMG talk page to sort this out. Jayvdb 14:29, 25 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] The Merseybeats
Hi, thanks for doing the corrections and tidying up the discography - by golly you're quick off the mark! I was planning to finish tidying it up later and I'd only stopped to make some coffee! :) Jud 12:20, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- Actually, I usually give people more of a chance than that! I wasn't watching The Merseybeats page but just happened to link to it from a recent change to Bowie's Pin Ups article (which I do watch) and didn't realise you'd only just expanded the thing. Anyway, well done yourself, content's the tough part - any pedant can tidy up... Cheers, Ian Rose 12:27, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Hello!
Hello, and thanks for giving me details on what colors means in music-related articles. I still don't know a lot of things on how this whole encyclopedia works, I'm just learning to write articles based on what other people does. My main projects right now are cleaning articles on Visage/Ultravox both in English and Spanish. Since my native language is Spanish and I'm not very fluent in English any help on having everything spelled the correct ways will be extremely greeted too.
Cheers! (Enigmaticland 03:47, 25 July 2006 (UTC))
[edit] Bowie disco
Just wanted to check that what I have done - added charts, certs, rearranged some stuff - is working for you. Fantailfan 19:41, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
- I think it's looking good and consistent - thanks for asking. My thoughts/questions: 1) Not sure about the 'Additional personnel' subsections. I think it looks better just listing everyone under the one heading; with a solo artist like Bowie it can be a little academic to have a hard-and-fast rule about who's 'core personnel' in his band at any one time. 2) Were you planning to add the UK charts and certifications to the tables? I think I know all the UK chart possies but not too sure about the certifications. 3) There are two Certification tables for Aladdin Sane, I assume one is redundant but don't know which date is correct. Cheers, Ian Rose 10:40, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- Postscript: Sorry, I realise that you've included UK charts/certifications to some of the articles but not all by the look of it; as I indicated, I'm happy to add the UK charts but don't know any of the UK certifications that may be missing. Cheers again, Ian Rose 10:53, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, please add the UK charts. Certs I got from BPI, but I did not go to the UK Top 40 site I had been using for those charts. Fantailfan 12:42, 12 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thankyou very much Ian
Hey Ian, I just noticed your comment on Mets' talk page and I wanted to say thanks. I've honestly been blushing at the kind words people have written. Regardless of what happens with the RfA, I feel really encouraged to have had such comments written by editors I genuinely like and respect. So thankyou very much. :)
By the way, I was interested to read on your user page that you're an old RAAF-brat! I never joined the RAAF, but I worked for a while in the RAAF's Medical Support Unit at Victoria Barracks in Melbourne. Great experience.
Thanks again for your comments, Ian. Cheers, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 14:46, 16 August 2006 (UTC)
- You're very welcome, Sarah - but have you officially accepted yet 'cos I don't see you on the RfA page yet and I'm waiting to cast my vote!
- Glad you enjoyed working with the Air Force. I never joined either but I 'did my part' as an IT contractor at Headquarters Air Command, Glenbrook, in the Blue Mountains for four years. It was like coming home 'cos that's where we were stationed when I was born (in the days when it was called OPCOM - Operational Command). Actually I'll tell you a funny about the place which I can't put on the page because it's purely anecdotal and non-notable... When I first worked there it was called Air Headquarters (to go with the Army's Land Headquarters and Navy's Maritime Headquarters). Then they suddenly changed it to Headquarters Air Command. We all assumed it was because they got sick of the Army and Navy calling it Airhead Quarters... Cheers, Ian Rose 12:47, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
-
- LOL "Airhead Quarters" -- love it! :) Sarah Ewart (Talk) 03:48, 14 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Do you know....
Why the Brits get new music releases on Mondays and the Yanks on Tuesdays? Fantailfan 21:28, 17 August 2006 (UTC)
- I'm hoping this is a rhetorical question 'cos I haven't a clue! Cheers, Ian Rose 04:58, 18 August 2006 (UTC)
-
- Yes, it is rhetorical. Fantailfan 13:33, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks!
Thanks for the cleanup job on What happened on the Moon; I have been fighting with a couple of True Believer types over the page, and it certainly needed more straightening out. I have a bad feeling it all may get lost in the struggle, but for a few glorious hours, the page will look pretty good. --Brianyoumans 10:50, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I noticed that via Mets501's talk page and my sympathies were with you! I think you've done well with your updates and engaging an admin so with diligence (and a little luck) we can keep it looking reasonable. Cheers, Ian Rose 10:56, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] RAAF Pages up for deletion
Hi, just noticed the following pages are up for deletion with no objections, though you might want to check on them

I did upload the cover art for Ultravox's The Thin Wall. Seems like pictures in JPEG format are rejected by the system so I'll upload a copy of the image again, in another image format...

[edit] Going grey
Sorry about that, Ian. I could recommend a good hair colour if you like! :) Cheers mate, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 10:02, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
- Well, how would you feel about a nice blue rinse? Or maybe one of those multi-coloured ones the kids seem to like these days? I've always thought a little grey hair can look very distinguished and handsome on a man, so maybe you should embrace your new look! :D Sarah Ewart (Talk) 03:46, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

In that case, I don't know where the impression that the valve was installed backwards came form - it is on the Mohawk Airlines article. - Blood red sandman 16:44, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Album review links
Hi Chris, well done wikifying song titles on the Ultravox! album article. However, the use of a footnote for the Allmusic review is not per WP:ALBUM; the way it was with the direct 'link' is still the standard as far as I'm aware... Cheers, Ian Rose 10:01, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
- Oops! Thanks for letting me know. I'm still trying to remember all the various standards I should be observing...

[edit] Thanks Ian
Hey Ian, thank you so much for supporting my recent RfA. It passed with an amazing final tally of 160/4/1. Thankyou also for defending my lack of feature articles. :) I really appreciate your support. Cheers mate, Sarah Ewart (Talk) 04:45, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
- My pleasure, Sarah, on all counts. Hearty congrats, you deserved every vote and more. I see you've been getting the odd tidbit of advice as well. My only 'suggestion' is: don't change a thing...! Cheers, Ian Rose 15:40, 20 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Re: Claims that Colin Thurston co-produced "Heroes" (David Bowie)
I got the main source information from this webpage, which states that Thurston was co-producer of the album. Checking back at the AMG, he's downgraded to just being an engineer (the way he apparently was for a lot of Bowie's albums), but when I spotted that on the Discogs site, I grew very excited because I thought it'd be Thurston's first production credit. And, poor guy, he did a lot with Bowie and yet I still can't slot him anywhere where Bowie is concerned. (Krushsister 03:55, 28 September 2006 (UTC))
- Oh wow, it'd be a great idea to create an article on Thurston himself. If this is going to be done properly, we have to each contribute to the article, you writing about Thurston's work with Bowie (and apparently Iggy Pop too -- wow, so "Lust For Life" was co-produced by him), and me writing about when Thurston became a producer for '80s New Wavers. The only problem I have is that I don't know what he's been up to since he was (apparently) the in-house producer for this now-defunct record company. But if you know more about what's happened to him since that time period, that knowledge would be highly invaluable. Oh, you are a prince for coming up with that idea! (Krushsister 02:31, 3 October 2006 (UTC))

[edit] The Bowie Template
First of, thanks for reviewing my template.. This is the first time I've done anything like this so sorry for the mistakes. I based the template on John Lennon's, and it gives no problems on my IE. As for the "David bowie" instead of "David Bowie", i only realised later that it would make a difference.
I'm kinda busy these days so I'd be really pleased if you could carry on the good work. Also is there any way that the template can be added to many pages without individually editting each page?

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:JeanGenie6.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:JeanGenie6.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Fritz Saalfeld (Talk) 16:34, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Non-capitalization of every word in song titles
Thanks for the pointer to that policy, though I do question exactly how it was formulated (especially since "song titles" is not in the header for that section, and it was possibly thrown in as an afterthought). The convention I have seen outside of Wikipedia is to capitalize every letter in song titles, even those that would not usually be capitalized. I have found that this convention seems to be more prevalent in music criticism circles but is not so much adhered to by the common journalist or editor; it may even be peculiar to British English, though if you know more about this, I hope you will be able to enlighten me.
