[edit] St Kilda career
Stewart played in the VFL, firstly with St Kilda from 1963-1970. He made his name with the Saints as a dashing centreman. He won two Brownlow Medals with the Saints, in 1965 (tied with Noel Teasdale) and 1966, and was part of the Saints' only premiership side in 1966. He captained the Saints in 1969, before leaving the club at the end of 1970 in a swap with Richmond player Bill Barrot.
[edit] Richmond career
Stewart joined the Richmond Tigers for the 1971 season, where he won his third Brownlow Medal in his first year there. This victory made Stewart the first person to win Brownlow Medals at two different clubs. He was part of the Tigers' 1973 premiership side; retired in mid 1974 but played a few games in 1975 after being talked out of retirement. Played 78 games with the Tigers.
[edit] Coaching career
Stewart coached the South Melbourne Football Club in 1976 and 1977, and then switched to Carlton in 1978, where he only coached for 3 games (1 win and 2 losses), retiring after a minor heart attack. In 1979 he was back at South Melbourne, until he finished coaching in 1981, with an unsuccessful record of 111 games with the Swans for 49 wins, 60 losses and 2 draws.
[edit] Post coaching career
Had a managerial role back at St Kilda.

Stewart was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in its inaugural year in 1996, before he was upgraded to Legend status in 1997.
