"I Could Have Lied" is a song by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. It appears on their 1991 album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The sixth track on the album, it is a ballad in which Anthony Kiedis sings about a troubled relationship he had with Sinéad O'Connor.John Frusciante's guitar plays a very prominent role in this song, including two solos, which although the guitar sound is very raw, sound very soulful. Frusciante's solos on this song are often cited as perfect examples of the use of feel and tone in a solo. The song changes key between B Minor and E Minor several times throughout it's duration. It features a more mellow and slow feel, a style which was not previously associated with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This style would signpost the direction the band would take in later albums Californication, By The Way, and Stadium Arcadium.
