[edit] The Self-Referencing I Ching : using the I Ching to describe itself
The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.
- The skeletal form of hexagram 55 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 56 where we have a generic focus on issues of loyalty at a distance, foreign surroundings etc. Here in 55 the main issue is on abundance such that one's loyalties can be pulled hither and thither; as there is a wealth of choices etc so there is a wealth of 'dark' choices as well - abundance of wealth attracts an abundance of thieves.
The Lines:
Line 1-Meeting with the ruler for 10 days. When you find a worthy stay with him. If something is working fine, do not be in a hurry to change it.
Line 2- In different translations, this line seems to speak of something covering or obscuring a source of light. It offers that if you are this source of light, you should proceed even though your good intentions might be obscured.
Line 3-An abundance of brush on the thatched house. That which is obscuring the light continues to grow at a slow pace. No one is to blame.
Line 4-The extent of darkness has reached its limit. face your fears and they will be powerless.
Line 5- Recognition is coming. Modesty in seeking will bring support.
Line 6-His house is screened off. He peers through and sees no one. Even in a state of abundance, one can be alone if one is not travelling the correct path.
[edit] The Solar Eciplise
The solar eclipse described in this hexagram's traditional text occurred on June 20, 1070 BC. The significance is that this puts the earliest date on the composition of the text for this hexagram. The received text claims a composition date that is millennia earlier.
