[edit] The Self-Referencing I Ching : using the I Ching to describe itself
The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.
- The skeletal form of hexagram 44 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 43 where we have a generic focus on 'spreading the word', seeding, that is refined in 44 with its focus on persuasion and seduction.
The Lines:
Line 1- Attached to a metal brake. Now is the time to knock out smaller vices. Do not underestimate the potential for small problems to grow. Deal with them now.
Line 2- A fish in the tank. Holding on to one's possessions. Keep inferioe elements at bay or under firm control.
Line 3- No skin on the thighs. An incorrect path has been taken. This not the end but a path change is necessary. Do not wait.
Line 4- No fish in the tank. Be careful not to alienate those who may seem beneath you. You may need their help later.
Line 5- A melon wrapped in willow leaves. Use your abilities to protect and encourage subordinates.
Line 6 - Coming to meet with horns. Sometimes it is necessary to deal harshly with the world. It is unfortunate and may be alienating, but ultimately it is what is needed.
