[edit] The Self-Referencing I Ching : using the I Ching to describe itself

The following material is drawn from analysis of the binary sequence of the hexagrams where the hexagrams are derived from recursion of yin/yang and so showing a property of the method - the hexagrams are all linked together and contribute to the expression of, the description of, each hexagram.

  • The skeletal form of hexagram 39 is described by analogy to the under-exaggerated properties of hexagram 37 where we have a generic focus on rigid structure.

The focus of 39 is on (a) being an obstruction, going against the 'mindless' flow, standing up to it, and (b) using the flow to get around, to bypass, obstructions.

The lines:

Line 1- Limping/Obstruction in proceeding. There is praise in coming. Set priorities straight. Do not move forward blindly, but do not get bogged down in the moment. If the current situation is unfavorable, move on without looking back.

Line 2- A King's servant is limping. Inspiration sometimes requires restriction and discipline. Duty to higher cause may require meeting obstacles head on. Creativity will continue to exist even within restrictions.

Line 3- Limping/Obstruction in proceeding. Coming leads to a reversal. Turn inward. Look to uniformity and structure to alleviate obstruction. Responsibility to others should temper your decisions. Be severe in deciding what obstructions to cast off.

Line 4- Limping/Obstruction in proceeding. There is continuity in coming. Genuine continuity is preferable to constant adapting. Make preparations and gather support. People recognize the truth and will support you if you cling to it.

Line 5- Do not fear obstruction. It is at these times that friends arrive. Well directed cooperation can overcome obstacles. Do not fear obstacles. They may be opportunities.

Line 6- Limping/Obstruction in proceeding. There is progress in leaving the known and good fortune in meeting great people. Duty may call you to face an obstacle. Although the obstacle may be of a world you have transcended you must return. Your inner freedom will allow you to prevail, even when outwardly oppressed.
