I. Beverly Lake Sr.

Isaac Beverly "Bev" Lake Sr. (1906-1996), was a North Carolina jurist, law professor at Wake Forest University, and politician. He was born in Wake Forest, North Carolina.
After a distinguished career as a law professor and as an official at the state Department of Justice, Lake ran for Governor of North Carolina in 1960. He advanced to a Democratic Party primary runoff with eventual winner Terry Sanford. His conservative views on race contrasted with Sanford's moderate progressivism, making the contest important in North Carolina history.
Lake ran for governor again in 1964. He did not survive the first primary, but threw his support to Judge Dan Moore, which was crucial to Moore's victory in the runoff.
Unsuccessful in gubernatorial politics, Lake nevertheless earned great respect in his thirteen years (1965-1978) as an associate justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court.
He was the father of I. Beverly Lake, Jr., who followed him into politics and law.
