[edit] Synopsis
Apu and his new wife, Manjula, are visited from Homer and Marge for dinner. However, Apu and Manjula get in a fight, after Marge mentions to Manjula that Apu doesn't really need to be as much of a workaholic. There's a week before Valentine's Day, and Apu tells Homer that he is disappointed that Manjula doesn't love him, until Homer assures him that Manjula will not leave him before Valentine's Day, and Apu agrees. Apu decides to shower Manjula with many romantic surprises to regain her love. However, although many of Apu's surprises succeed in fixing his marriage, they ruin other people's relationships, as the rest of Springfield's women become disenchanted, as they are envious towards all the attention Manjula is receiving and they realize that their men are nothing more than cheapskates. At Moe's Tavern, several men in Springfield try to find ways to avoid having Apu and Manjula reconcile to save their relationships and marriages.
During Valentine's Day, Homer, Chief Wiggum, Dr. Hibbert, Moe, and Ned Flanders (who is later thrown out of the group for suggesting that they should use their time to be more romantic to their wives rather than to try to sabotage Apu) investigate what Apu is doing so they can stop it. They go around town following him to the airport. But when they see Elton John at the airport, they think that he supposedly came to Springfield to perform a concert for Apu and Manjula at his insistence. However, Apu's actual plan is that he arranged for a skywriter to write "I (heart) U MANJULA". During the trouble that ensues, Homer jumps on the plane during takeoff to try to stop the skywriter from spraying the message. When Homer destroys the plane's canister in mid-air it only sprayed part of the message, which the other women think is for them. However, Marge remains unconvinced until the plane flies by and Homer drops out of it covered with roses after the plane flew out of control through a thorny rose patch. Nonetheless, Elton John is able to perform a concert for Apu and Manjula, and their marriage is saved.
[edit] Cultural references
- The episode ends in a heart-shaped iris, à la Love, American Style.
- Apu owns "concert against Bangladesh", featuring the song "You Make Me Feel So Young" by Frank Sinatra; the album's name is a reference to George Harrison's Concert for Bangla Desh.
- The episode title is a spoof of a funny T-shirt saying "I'm with stupid", with an arrow pointing to the next guy.
[edit] Quotes
- Homer: Oh, baby—we've got him now! There's no escape from the airport!
- Apu: Ooh, Elton John!
Elton John: That's my name! (pause) Well, not really. - Homer (checking his pager): Hmm. What's an "eltdown"? (tosses pager)
- Sanjay: Stop worrying, Apu, the Kwik-E-Mart is in good hands!
[cut to Apu's apartment]
Apu: I am not checking up on you, I am simply asking you how many pennies you have left. SEVEN?! I'll be right there!
- Marge: You're a lifesaver, Apu. All the other stores are closed.
Apu: (gasp) At 11:30? But this is the peak hour for stoned teenagers buying shiny things!
Jimbo (looking at aluminum foil): Wow! It's a living mirror! Cool hat. - Bart: All right, "personals!" [looks one up] Successful mayor-type seeks open-minded discreet cheerleader-type.
Marge: Oh, that's sweet.
Bart: Oh, here's one. Desperately seeking suc- [Marge takes the paper]
- Apu (when he and Manjula go into the kitchen to argue):: Maybe we should close the door (Apu draws a bead curtain closed).
Marge (as Apu and Manjula begin yelling in Hindi): Maybe we should leave.
Homer: No way! I don't want to miss a word.
Marge: You don't even know what they're saying.
Homer: I'm picking it up. "Salla" seems to mean "jerk" and I think "Manjula" is some kind of spaceship.
- Marge: Homer, I've gone through seven years of receipts, and you've spent less on gifts for me than you have on temporary tattoos.
Homer: But Marge, it's worth it! - Moe: (At the suggestion that Apu may be buying Manjula a diamond) Awww, he's makin' us look like a bunch a' cheapskates- woah! My rope came loose (he reties a rope he has tied around his waist in lieu of a belt).
- Apu: (Gasps while looking at a calendar) Only seven days left to Valentine's Day, I still have seven chances to surprise sweet Manjula!
Homer: (Drooling) Mmmmmm...Sweet mint julep. - Manjula: [after a truck drops off a life-sized Apu statue] A chocolate husband! Oh, how darling.
Apu: [from inside "statue"] Help! I can't breathe!
[chocolate cracks and falls from around his head; Apu gasps for air]
Manjula: Oh, Apu! Oh, you are the sweetest filling of all.
Apu: Air ... [pants heavily] Need air.
Manjula: Oh, Apu.
Apu: Don't talk, my ears are filled with nougat.
Manjula: Oh, dear, oh ...
Apu: [blinks one eye] There's a nut in my eye!
- Ned: Ah, gee. The man's just trying to show his wife he cares for her. How can we sabotage his labor of love?
Homer: I don't know, gasoline, axes...I got some stuff in the trunk.
