I'm Waiting for the Man
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'm Waiting for the Man is a song by the American rock band The Velvet Underground. It was first released on their 1967 debut album, The Velvet Underground and Nico. The song chronicles a man purchasing 26 dollars worth of heroin in Harlem, waiting for his drug dealer. Along with traditional guitar, bass, and drums, the song also features rock and roll style piano. It is one of their more popular songs, and one of their many compositions about drug abuse. Lou Reed, the author of the song, continued to incorporate the song into his solo live shows. Reed does not often sing the song himself anymore.
Several artists have covered the song, including Bauhaus (with Nico), Belle & Sebastian, David Bowie on the BBC Seasons (later appeared in the Almost Famous Soundtrack), and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Velvet drummer Maureen Tucker has also recorded various versions of the song.
