"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" is a traditional song originally performed by The Proclaimers. It was released on their Sunshine on Leith album, and subsequently as a single. It has become one of their most popular songs, reaching the UK top 20 and #3 in the Billboard Hot 100. The song has become a live staple at their concerts. The Proclaimers played this song at Edinburgh 50,000 - The Final Push, the final concert of Live 8 at Murrayfield Stadium on 6 July 2005, to symbolise the conclusion of The Long Walk To Justice.

The song is understandably popular in Scotland, where at Hampden Park, every time the national team scores, the song is played and sung along to in a raucous manner by all Scotland fans, confirming how The Proclaimers' timeless classic is a figure of cult. So much so some Scottish fans jokingly feel as though it should be the national anthem as supposed to the Flower of Scotland. It is also thought of as the unofficial anthem of Edinburgh's Hibernian F.C., the Proclaimers being fans of the team and the fact that Sunshine On Leith is played frequently at Easter Road, Hibs' home ground.

[edit] Covers

Contrary to popular belief, Less Than Jake have never covered The Proclaimers' iconic hit "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)". Drummer, lyricist and band spokesman Vinnie has joked that it is the band's 'most downloaded song', despite the fact that they have never recorded their own version of it. Down By Law's cover, from their album Punkrockacademyfightsong, is most often miscredited to Less Than Jake.

It is also the theme song to the film Benny & Joon. Matt Lucas and Peter Kay will release it as a charity single for Comic Relief in 2007.[1]
