[edit] The song is believed to be him giving her an ultimatum....?!

It doesn't appear like an ultimatum to me:

"and now the time has come so my love i must go/and though i lose a friend in the end you will know..."

that seems like a straightforward statement, rather than a threat or ultimatum.
