[edit] Girls Aloud version

Girl group Girls Aloud recorded a cover of the song that served as the official Children in Need song of 2004 (see 2004 in music). It was released as a single and gave Girls Aloud their second UK number-one hit, selling over 60,000 copies in its first week of release and staying at the top for two weeks. In the UK it has sold more than 160,000 copies, making it Girls Aloud's third biggest selling single there, and the proceeds went to charity. It stayed in the UK top forty for nine weeks. The video for Girls Aloud's version of "I'll Stand by You" begins with each member of the band lying or sitting motionless in a parched desert. At the song's climax a thunderstorm begins, and the band members come together and stand in a circle. A special Children in Need version of the video depicts the band members holding "Pudsey" teddy bears, the mascot of the organization, towards the end of the video.

In Ireland, the song managed to peak at number 3 and staying there for four consecutive weeks. In total, the single remained nine weeks in the top ten and fifteen weeks in the Irish Singles Top 50.
